How do I send personal messages? Whenever I try a random member ends up in the ’to’ line totally unrelated to the person the message was intended for.

Anyway, I was trying to send you a message to suggest that windowfarms.org should start selling merch to raise money and to promote the cause. What are you thoughts?

It’s nice because you can have plants that need shade as the deep water culture while having the ones of above in the sun.

Here’s what my WF looks like after 2 weeks. Everything is coming along nicely, especially the spinach.

very nice! I’m using dyna-gro 7-9-5 GROW, it’s an 11oz. bottle that cost about $6. I can get away with using only a grow-type nutrient solution because my plants (spinach, cilantro, micro greens) don’t bloom. For the peppers you’ll need to switch from a grow to a bloom solution after a month or two.

  • Travis wrote a new blog post: Pumice as a grow medium   3 years ago · View

I bought a big bag of “premium organic pumice” to use as my grow medium because it was only $4.00 for a 4-quart bag. It’s working just fine so far but I definitely would NOT recommend it to others. Smaller pieces fall through the net pots, it has a lot of dust that settles in [...]

Wow this system is awesome!!! Does anyone know the electricity cost to run grow lights per month? Obviously it depends on a lot, but just ball park…

Thanks! I got all the kinks worked out now. No, the reservoir doubles as kind of its own system. The fourth net pot sits in the reservoir suspended in the nutrient solution and the water drips through the pot back into the system. And since the pump has two outputs and I’m only using one for the airlift, I’m using the other one for an air stone in the reservoir so when the roots of the plants in the fourth net pot grow into the water, they won’t suffocate. I’ll make another video when my plants are more impressive. -Travis

Great! what part of Portland? Do you know of any groups or organizations with anything to do with windowfarms in Portland?

  • Travis commented on the blog post My first window farm   3 years, 1 month ago · View

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I added the caps with tubes running from each one down to the next one. Now I just need to get my airlift to work consistently. The air pressure seems to be too much because after a few minutes of running, the air begins to bubble out the bottom instead [...]

Wow that’s a great idea thanks!!

Lorne: The net pots are just sitting inside the 2-liter bottle tops, and the whole thing is hung up using zipties.

That is awesome! I love how you integrated it with the blinds. So is the idea that are you moving the water from the coffee container into the bottle a few times per day? You could also try attaching some of the air tubing to the cap of the bottom bottle and have the air tubing run into your reservoir bottle. That would close the loop for you. Are you getting any splashing as the water drips onto the pumice below? Where did you get the pumice? I don;t know of anyone trying pumice before? Can you write about it in another post tagged with hydroponic medium and let us know how it works over time? Can you test the water circulating through the pumice and see if it has a neutral ph? Finally, I would move your little growplug that you planted from out of the drip stream. Try moving it to the side inside it’s container. If the water drips directly on it, it might be too much for the little seedling. Congratulations! So happy to see troubleshooting your airlift worked and you found the water depth issue at cause. I’m loving it. -Britta
