I’m really curious about your pumping method – since it seems much more simple than the both the t-joint and the air-pump needle methods.

Could you say a little more about it. Where is the small hole located? How large is it? How well does the pump work?

  • Joel Gombiner wrote a new blog post: Thoughts on T-joint airlift   1 month, 3 weeks ago · View

I think many people, myself included, have had some initial troubles constructing a working t-joint airlift. Remember, we’re dealing with relatively complicated fluid dynamics here, so it’s understandable that this is a tricky process. That said, once you understand the few key variables that are important in the operation of the t-lift, it’s an incredibly [...]

  • Looks cool. You should build some window-farms!

2 of the 8 are new and under construction for a gift for a girlfriend. My tomates are probably over-watered. Not all of the various plants survived. It’s tricky sometimes. Otherwise a cool hobby.

  • Joel Gombiner commented on the blog post Open-source science: What’s the pH of your tap-water?   3 months ago · View

Interesting, thanks for the replies so far. I’m gonna wait on the map and see if more people reply. Out of this small sample of three, we all have neutral or basic tap-water, whereas plants prefer an acidic pH. This could be an important issue that means acidifying water is an important step of hydroponic [...]

I’ll collect the results into a map and post it.

Let me know how the vinegar works in your system. I’ve been using lemon juice to lower my pH, but I’m curious as to how vinegar compares.
    Hope everything goes well.

    Wow the table looks awesome.
That’s a shame that it’s hard to edit. We should make editable tables a prioritized feature in new versions of the website.

    Hi tedi-

Your pH is too high. Plants prefer a slightly acidic environment – it facilitates uptake of nutrients. I’ve heard that an ideal pH is between 6 and 6.5. However, this does depend on the particular species. I’m not sure about lettuce.

Also, you may be over-watering and over-feeding. Most people add nutrients every week or two, and water once per day when the plants are young.

    Hope that helps.

When your plants are young they need less water. So, for the first month or so, you may only run the pump once per day.

  • Joel Gombiner commented on the blog post What brand of nutrients should I buy?!   3 months, 1 week ago · View

It’s more complicated than choosing “which brand to buy”. You have to learn about how plants use nutrients. The answer (if there can be said to be an answer), depends on the types of plants you are growing, your water chemistry, environmental conditions, and perhaps a few other factors. That said, with nutrients, the most [...]

Gaiatechnician, those were some good and interesting points. I hadn’t even imagined that something like a hydroponic window-farm (which can take on an infinite variety of forms) could be patented and made into private property. Let us hope that never happens. What I originally intended to highlight, was a potential conflict between two philosophies, between [...]

Slow down. Windowfarms are about slow food. There’s no need to move units, sell product.   If you’re not getting what I’m saying here, it’s a basic objection to the idea (implicit in the slick advertising of this website’s front page) that one can just “buy a windowfarm”. Growing plants is fundamentally different from ANY [...]
