It should work, just needs to cover the roots. The lighter the paint, the more algae growth you will get, but brown is fairly close to black, so you will be good.
In reply to - Elizabeth Chaturvedi posted an update in the group For Beginners : I am going to get supplies today to begin building, and was wondering if the color of the paint on the bottles is important. I already have brown primer spray paint and would like to use it instead of buying more. Does anyone know if this would [...] · View -

While @vincent has a point, that fungi probably should be grown in soil, I think they could play an important role in hydroponics. Many hydroponic greenhouses still deal with a wide variety of pests, from insects to bacteria. using a variety of fungi to surround the hydroponics systems, it might help eliminate the pests that come [...]

That’s brilliant. @erin I would go with Brian’s suggestion.
Another idea could be using multiple types of plants for maximum yield from general hydroponic/aquaponic solutions. Different plants require different nutrients. a test for general hydroponics solutions would benefit home growers, Aquaponics would help larger scale farms if it proves to be a more profitable solution.

I’ve also seen one system where they use Areoponics to cool leafy greens because the area they are growing in is too hot. might work the other way too.

Lettuce and many leafy greens grow better in a cooler environment. so sub 70F may work for them.
You might want to try to run it as a NFT system(constant flow over the roots) to keep the temp up and consistent.

yes, especially if you are using a non specialized solution. They use crop rotation for a similar reason.

Well, you could extrapolate the general dimensions, then create a rendering with one side facing out the window. It’s likely 8-10″ per shelf. Hope that will help you.

I’m only just getting my first system together. but I’ve been researching for about a month on hydroponics. I’ve talked with a few people and read 5 books(and about half a dozen thesis papers) on the subject of hydroponics.
I’ll have my first system up and running in time for Christmas, so I’ll definitely let you know how it goes. Just remember to subscribe to the Florida Group.
In reply to - Susan posted an update in the group Florida: I have downloaded the plans for a basic three container window garden. I’ve had success with ornimental plants in my east-facing office. Did a bit of research for you. In Florida, Strawberries grow best when it’s cooler(about 70F) when it gets warm(upwards of 85F) the plants will wilt and the leaves will discolor. When it get gold(sub 50F) the plant will have a similar reaction. In the books I’ve read on hydroponics, depending upon the plant, it’s [...]

Do some research on plants that are “friendly” with one another. Friendly meaning that they balance each other’s nutrient needs. The nutrients that the plants leave behind from general solutions will change the conductivity(that’s what pH measures) of the water. If I come across an article or book that has a good set of planting [...]

I’ve never tried it. but yes, the reservoir must be kept dark, as well as your lines if possible. It helps prevent algae growth, which will rob the oxygen from the roots of the plants. Oxygen helps the plants absorb nutrients.
Only way to know if it will work is test it out. If you can, run half your columns on regular nutrients and the other half on tea, so you will get a really clear idea of how effective it is.In reply to - kyle kovarna posted an update: Hey I was wondering if anyone has experimented with worm casing tea for growing lettuce? Nice, I like the idea of using a PVC resevoir on top. I”m wondering if it can hold the weight of the bottles. Would be useful to be able to easily move it outside when you want to.
