I found the clay pellets at Costa Rica Hydroponics (http://costaricahydroponics.com). They’ve got a shop 800 meters east of Forum I on the Autopista Del Sol. The net cups I had to get online at Amazon.com.

I found I could improve the lift a little by adding a check valve just below the T on the water line. With no ‘push back’ from the air all the energy was upwards.

You can start with either. Starting with plants gets your window farm going quickly and you’ll sooner enjoy watching the plants grow. OTOH I very much enjoyed starting with seeds, though there was a learning curve and it took patience. Be sure to pick plants that are healthy, don’t have any weird spots or, bugs. [...]

Thanks @hardwarejunkie. The lights are farther than they look in the pictures, they’re a good 35cm or so away. But you’re right, and I’ll move the lights back if I see the plants growing towards them.
