What a great idea! I can’t wait to see photos once you have got all the plants in, it look stylish. I think I will be adding additional wires for support and then cutting off the tops of the bottles. I like the idea of more room for the plants. I would like to recommend the air lift system. People say it makes noise, but mine is whisper quiet. You can stand next to it and not know it’s on. I think it’s all about how you set it up. The only bad part is you have to have the tube going up as vertical as you can so the reservoir will have to be right under your farm. Check out the link bellow. I put together a nice diagram on how we set up our airlift system, hope it helps!

In reply to - Vedette posted an update: So finally after 2.5 months, I got this baby started. I drilled 3 evenly spaced holes in each funnel and hung them with ’S’ hooks to the wire knots. The knots are adjustable so I can change the height of the plants pretty easily if needed. It was all super simple. (in [...] · View -
Rama Dennett wrote a new blog post: Question? One hole, two holes or why not get ride of the top all together? 1 year, 6 months ago · View
I have a very nice window farm. I built it with two holes on either side of the bottle to allow 2 plants to grow out each side. This has been working very well and my plants are taking over my window, yay! As I was trimming some dead leaves I started wondering, why have holes [...] -

Thank you, The peppers just grew up like this, not a lot of leaves around the lower parts. The fertilizer I’m using looks peach red, it turns that brownish color after it circulates through the system a bit. I washed the clay pellets before I used them, but I think I still get some clay [...]

New plants in the farm! So we had a little problem. Our strawberries died. I’m not sure what happened, but we could never make them happy. So after changing out the old plants with new ones and doing some changes, everything is growing well. We are growing mint, peppers, and nasturtiums. Check out our last posting [...] -

Trygve, Removing the plant from the pellets will depend on the plant. I grew peas in two containers and the roots were so thick and tangled that after the pea harvest when I removed them I had to cut them out with a knife. Strawberries on the other hand came out with just a little [...]

Hello Admin, I don’t recommend not using the net cups. Major clog issues. The root system of my plants just grew right to the bottom of the bottle and got bunched up clogging the water flow. The extra weight was not an issue on our suspension, our set up is very sturdy anyway. I’m not [...]

I wish I had an outside to grow in like you guys, we are in a downtown apartment here, so trying to make due just with our little window farm. We have two rows of 5 planters, the bottom container in each row have peas in them, 3 or 4 pea plants in each. In [...]

Our timer cost $14, and allows us to turn on the pump at 15 minute intervals. We cycle it on for 15 minutes every hour when light, and 15 minutes every 2 hours when dark.

Although you already switched to the water pump, check out my setup for the air pump lift. It is capable of lifting water over 8 feet with a 14 inch reservoir depth. http://our.windowfarms.org/2010/04/26/our-hydroponic-window-farm-experience/

I am a little worried that the peas might overtake the strawberries that are above them, but our window gets a lot of sun and is very tall, so hopefully the strawberries won’t mind the bit of shade the peas will provide. We will have to wait and see how they co-exist.

lol, what isn’t working? how deep/tall is your reservoir? air bubbles coming out of the side? what size tubing do you have? is the tube really straight?

I’m very new to the whole hydroponic thing, but I would look at what your using for nutrients. We first used a nutrient solution that was for soilless plants and it turned out, ”soilless” is a broad turm. We switched to a solution recomended by the guy at the hydroponic shop and everything is working much better.

Samenrahmen, I am not sure if the system will clog yet. We didn’t put any screens in to prevent clogging, but I can unscrew the caps on the bottles fairly easily, so hopefully if clogging happens I will be able to clean it. As for the inflation needles, the air lift system is very delicate, [...]

This is a summary of our build and experience so far. Our window frame measures 75” x 31” so we thought two columns with five rows (ten containers total) would work well. We decided to use the recommended 1.5 liter water bottles for the containers, but instead of cutting one outlet per bottle, we decided [...] - Load More
