Plants, just like people, do best in life when they get a good start. Growing from seed can be a second level challenge. It’s a good idea to start your windowfarm by transplanting semi-mature plants started in soil pots to get the hang of growing hydroponically. Then, you can take on the next level challenge [...]

Thanks for all your advice, guys. This really helped. We have now got the process worked out better and have also seen a lot of demographic trends over the last 6-8 months since we started selling kits and bottles. We are now selling kits with bottles pulled from the trash and prepared by the Mid-Hudson [...]

Homemade Nutrients: 1 year ago · ViewNutrient solutions differ in their relative quantities of nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and trace minerals. We have been working with watercanary.org to analyze the concentrations of these important elements in compost sources. Do you have resources to add or are you willing to test formulations in your own windowfarm?

Homemade Nutrients: 1 year ago · ViewMany nutrient formulations such as MaxSea and the Botanicare line use Mid Atlantic seaweed. I’ve started harvesting several species off the beach, drying them, and crushing them. Does anyone else want to adding this powder to their nutes and doing some controlled testing?

New Windowfarms ! 1 year ago · ViewHey Guys,
I haven’t been posting much lately. I’m trying to just stay focused on getting the organization and the new site in place. I have a bunch of stuff saved up that I’ll post as soon as I can. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that I’m totally watching what’s going on here and I love it. I wanted to let you guys know about a few other things afoot in this area.1- I was part of the open hardware summit last year (co-founded the open mechanics group) and have a lot of friends who can help us out on hardware from Lil Bits, to the Arduino core team, to Sparkfun.
2- My friend is the founder of Water Canary, an opensource water quality tester device, and we’ve started tinkering with nutrient samples from the big windowfarm at our new HQ in Brooklyn to try to use his device to analyze composition of compost teas so folks can do DIY compost nutes one day.
3- Michael Doherty (neufuture.com), who’s been working with me on the Windowfarms core team for more than a year now has this awesome open mobile sensor network project that he’s trying to extend for windowfarms. I think he’s been more active in another group called sensors.
4- Let’s also think about how to tie in with smartphones. Even if it’s not a self-regulating system with injection systems, a reminder to the human operator can be a big help too. Plus, logging data about plant species, planting dates, nutrient mix, seasonal daylight hours, etc is much easier from your phone when you’re standing there, rather than having to go to your computer. I should make a post about this and get ya’ll to take the idear and run with it.
5- I have another friend who is a commercial hydro farmer. I’ve been checking out his regulator systems and he’s been telling me about the pros and cons of various commercial grade options. Let me know if you have any questions you want me to ask him.

If one salad = one head of lettuce and each head take 60 days to mature than 60 plants are needed. If you want other stuff on your salad than you’ll need more.

Roots (=plants) need a beneficial bacterial/fungal environment for healthy growth – using this charred earth tactic will kill off said environment time and again. And then, just as in conventional agriculture, all sorts of unwanted thing will get to your weakened plants. Remember, you aren’t working in some sterile Space Shuttle environment; you have to [...]

If that’s any help to you: I couldn’t get these two species to grow, either. Why don’t you try the following: Stop using the peroxide, reduce the humic acid to the absolute minimum, and put in salads, (or peppers/tomatoes/nasturtiums) – if normal salads don’t grow, you can still change things in your system; I think [...]
