Alright guys, here’s the news. The worm-farm tea works great; I’ve been running it for almost a month now and things look really healthy. All my mint has grown back in and is starting to overtake the window, and I need to trim it back actually. I have cabbage that’s growing nicely. I even stuck a piece of cut lavender in a spare section in the window to see if it would take, and now it’s growing well too! I have replaced the nutrients once every two weeks and diluted it down. The tea goes bad and grows fungus, so make it in small batches. I’d give it a week life span, though I don’t know if the fungus is actually bad for the plants anyway. I filtered it and used the liquid part. No problems so far, and no bio-film either, just on the outside of the tube where I wipe it off. My sympathy goes out to those suffering bio-film woes. =(

And don’t expect perfect right away; you might get a few dead plants before the perfect veggies. Never give up though! They’ll happen =)

Look into composting if you need natural fertilizer you don’t have to buy. You can make a tea-like brew out of the compost and run that through the window farm, it just takes food scraps and time: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL65A97AE205A27FDE PS: A small air pump for what you need will cost less than $20 American, and the [...]

Fruits are awesome, but you have to avoid tree fruits, which are unfortunately the best kind: mangoes, pineapple, oranges, etc… Don’t grow trees to well in a window =P You might be able to start them as seedlings like that, who knows? I’m trying berries for my fruit experiment, so we’ll see how that goes, [...]

Wow, thanks! This has been a great experience so far. I’ll throw in more pictures as I figure out what works best down here. I’m actually a little giddy that this is all finally working out =)

The compost tea is made from dirt from my worm farm, a seaweed concentrate, and some honey mixed into water. I bubble air through it for a day or so, until it’s frothy. The worms compost my kitchen scraps; no oils, meat, dairy, or acidic things like lemons.

This is actually my first attempt at a window farm, so this is a bit of an experiment to see how the plants do before I build something a bit larger.

Thumbnail So my prototype window farm is up and running. It has two separate water lines: one straight, three plant column that has transplanted mint of different types on the right, and one three-two staggered chain with red cabbage started in the system from seed. I’m using this prototype chain to do a dry run on [...]

Exciting! Can you describe how you mixed the compost tea, what the the worms were composting, and what nutrient solution were you using before the compost tea?

I’m trying out something called compost tea. I’m using dirt from my worm farm to make it, along with a concentrate from boiling seaweed water down to a dark liquid, and something sweet (molasses/honey) to promote growth, but in principle I think you could adapt this for brewing all kinds of “liquid dirt.” I think [...]

This is great! What a neat way to make these things portable! I can imagine putting them in front of glass doors that you can just “swing” out of the way. This looks sturdy, cheap, and easy. Have you found that it can handle some weight? Is it easy to slide the rails back and [...]

I love your idea of using a coil of tubing for some resistance. It also gives some time to see what’s going through the line and to deal with any flow changes. Great idea that I’m happy to say I use on all my systems now. I’m using ~1 gal reservoirs that sit on a [...]

I think the microorganisms tend to be a good thing, if you try to sterilize then you’ll just end up with the really strong stuff that survives (which I think might be a bad thing), or I’m worried you’ll be killing off what helps the plant grow. I’m not too sure you can control the [...]

I was thinking about how to do this, might borrow your idea when I get mine going. Looks like you’ve got it optimized pretty nicely! Have you thought of maybe using 2 pumps pushing into the same lines? I don’t know if that’d be more consistent on your flow or just make it louder. I [...]

ThumbnailSo this post was supposed to come about a week ago, but I’ve been lazy… Remember this is still a patched together prototype. I’m going to let it go a while and see where the kinks are for when I build my next one. Here’s a link to the first post, and how this all got [...]
