Hi! Ive been having problems with my water flow lately. I started my (home-made) window farm a few weeks ago with just one bottle on top of my water reservoir, and the water flow was excellent, a real continuous flow of water pouring down. Yesterday, I decided to add two more bottles to my system. [...]

thank you so much for your reply and suggestions! good to know about the air valve too. i guess i will just have to wait and see how my little basil plant reacts in order to get the hang of it. i’m using a homemade one and so far just have one plant to start with. thanks!!

i just finished (finally) installing my new window farm. im a little concerned about the amount of water coming out through the tubing at the top though. i feel like its coming out like a stream ( a little too fast, its almost continuous, with big spurts every few seconds). is this ok? what can i do to modify it? also, how do i make the water fall from the tube directly where the roots are, and not off to the side, or spraying out of the holes..? last question: for how long should i set the timer to start the pump for, and at what interval of time? the minimum i can set my timer for is 30 minutes at a time. is this too long? thanks!!Some plants like more water, but then again you may find some plants don’t like so much…
Is this homemade or a purchased kit?
You can buy an air valve from the aquarium shop and throttle the amount of air to slow the stream. (they’re cheap)
As for directing the flow onto the roots – just bend the tubing and hold with elestic band, string or something. Some people have their system running 24/7 if it drips. the main concern is letting the roots get flooded, so maybe 30 ON 30 OFF is better for you.
See how you plants react.I personally use a water pump to an upper resevoir rather than air lift. I fill up the resevoir for 10 min every hour and it drips for 30 min, then dry off for 30 before the refill. Sees to work for tomato, pepper and chilli ok.

basil is really forgiving… and should grow like crazy in the windowfarm.
If you using the expanded clay balls, they should let lots of water drain, but if your using rock wool or something, it may get water logged.Good luck
Hi Brian, Thanks for sharing your experiences. I am doing my homework before I start to build my v 2 window farm. You mention you use a ”water pump to an upper resevoir rather than air lift”. Can you post a photo of what it looks like? Would it also be quite straightforward to expand the farm to include more plants later on?
Thanks!

Based on what I read, the pump should be running for 1 or 2 times 10 minutes per hour, some people make even fewer than that. If you think your pump is pumping too much, you should be able to control it using check valves found in pet stores. Something I found about the pump and airflow: http://hagen.com/pdf/aquatic/Elite_LeafletUL_USA.pdf
Hope this helps!
