    Hi Dmitry,

I’m located in Tampere as well. There’s http://chilitarvike.fi/ that has a store in Tammela. Check it out. I used GHE’s FloraMato and FloraMicro.

Only sealant I used was a gasket that came with the tap. I used a circular saw attached to a power drill to make the hole. The tap kit is manufactured by AutoPot.

It was there temporarily to support the plant but basil doesn’t usually need that.

I just stuck the end of the tube inside rockwool :)

Tomato was the first plant that came into my mind after I saw this group. It grows amazingly fast even in soil, let alone hydroponics. It could be a good choice to use as a ”root donor” :)

Tomato growth is absolutely insane in hydroponics systems. My 2 month old plants had grown to about 70cm tall, that’s more than 1cm per day! I had to take the plants down from the WF and plant them in soil for two reasons: 1) The plants were supporting themselves against the window, resulting in trunks [...]

I have a WF that has a column, and a tall reservoir with space for four separate plants on top of it. Take look at this post for details. I have planted tomatoes, basil, parsley, rucola, coriander, strawberry, chili, and lettuce so far, and I’ve made some observations. Since my design only has one airlift, and [...]

I’ve been wondering the same thing. I can say one thing about basil though: It’s a good idea to cut them from the top to prevent them from growing too tall. So I pick the top leaves from the tallest plants, and then cut them down so that the excess “trunk” is cut off.

  • Mikko Mattila commented on the blog post Windowfarm made out of glas   1 year, 2 months ago · View

Hi, Sounds like an interesting project. Some people have made window farms out of wine bottles, but in that case the plant should be sitting “on top” of the cut bottle so that light doesn’t have to go through the bottle to get to the plant. I’m pretty sure that colored glass would slow down [...]

The T-joint of the airlift is hidden behind the radiator.

  • Mikko Mattila commented on the blog post Open-source science: What’s the pH of your tap-water?   1 year, 2 months ago · View

I’m in Tampere, Finland. The tapwater here has a pH of 8. I measured this using indicator liquid, and double checked the number from the local water department’s website. Pretty high O_o

Kevin: The pump is on the floor between the desk and the wall.
Brian: I’ll try to get some pictures of the reservoir added today.

  • Mikko Mattila commented on the blog post Fine tuning my window farm   1 year, 3 months ago · View

Thanks! burt: The water in the bottom of the pots hasn’t been a problem so far. I guess I’ll see in a couple of months if it becomes an issue. The plants in the pictures, apart from the bigger basil, are germinated by me. They’re about 3-4 weeks old now. Especially the tomato is growing [...]

  • Mikko Mattila wrote a new blog post: Fine tuning my window farm   1 year, 3 months ago · View

Update, March 3rd: Added some pictures and descriptions. When I got this floor standing flower pot reservoir, I started off with a needle airlift. The needle turned out to be really unreliable and the result was also noisier than a T-airlift. Fortunately I found a “tap” that can be attached to any reservoir with a non-curved [...]

Peter: Ok, that’s good information, thanks! I’ll be replacing the tubing asap.

  • Mikko Mattila commented on the blog post To buy a new windowfarm go to windowfarms.org   1 year, 3 months ago · View

Wow, the price is actually pretty competitive. My own single column setup cost about the same to build than you’re charging for the single column. :)

  • Mikko Mattila commented on the blog post New design for glass ceilings   1 year, 3 months ago · View

Looks very nice. However, my primary concern is the airlift. It is known to work best when the tubing is straight and upward. I hope it’s not an issue here. I’m looking forward to seeing pictures of the actual system.

  • Mikko Mattila commented on the blog post Windowfarm as mobile tower V1.0   1 year, 3 months ago · View

Oh wow, this is something I’ve been after. Having the column hang from the ceiling makes it harder to move the WF around but you’ve got it solved here. Does your construction feel stable? I would imagine the center of gravity is pretty high from the ground. If stability is an issue I guess you [...]

  • Mikko Mattila commented on the blog post Flood and Drain mod   1 year, 3 months ago · View

In the Finnish chili growing community this type of system is typically called an ebb. (Ebb and flow) However, I don’t fully understand if there’s a significant difference between the drip irrigation and “flood and drain”. As far as I understand, the same mechanism of “stale air out, fresh air in” happens in the drip [...]
