Hey Christian, Should be easy to find, at any fish store. I’m using standard airline tubing and fittings. The 3″ net pots you can find on Amazon, or any local hydroponics store(they prolly will have the airlines, too). I’ll look for some resources and follow up, and I’ll have an update on my garden soon, [...]

Hi Dario, Ilived a summer with a guy from Zagreb, Neno. He was hilarious. I could tell some stories, but they might not be appropriate for this forum ;) Then there was Katja and Boris accross the hall, Katja is from Dubrovnik. I don’t remember where Boris was from… oh jeez. Anyways…on to the question [...]

Glancing it looks like the crown of the strawberries is too low, it should protrude from the surface. The water shouldn’t drip directly on them so much. A string hanging from the upper bottle to the back of the net pot should be sufficient to divert the water a bit. Over-watering is easy with the strawbs.

well, they are cheap to build from mostly recycled materials and cost cents a year to operate the pumping mechanisms. 16 plants costs me about 50cents in power a year on a 3 watt pump. In a solar home, or even with a very small solar panel, the system can be run for free. That [...]

Like seriously! I have been a web developer for years and would freely offer some maintenance and update support. There should be development teams for windowfarms to increase market penetration, moderate and improve security, improve interoperability with the wider web, improve the site features and SEO, and generally plan out development goals in a coordinated [...]

That sounds cool, I look forward to seeing your urine results and commentary… Start a Post and keep it up to date :)
I just started vermicomposting recently, i will be adding updates soon.

I know ammonia is good for most plants… I would be wary of legumes, I have burned peas with bloodmeal, which decomposes to ammonia rapidly.

In reply to - Mitch posted an update in the group Homemade Nutrients : I’m considering making three three-bottle systems this summer to test different nutrient solutions. One will be a constant, which I will use the 16 16 16 recommended in the D-I-Y instructions. With the other, I plan on using vermicomposting or using worm castings described in this post ( http://our.windowfarms.org/2010/05/21/free-nutrient-solution/). [...] · View

Make sure you use a waterproof paint and make sure it drys way way well. Though if you add a substrate to the bottle, you prolly won’t need to paint it. I like that idea, though I would wonder if it would make it impossible to move plants around. I would jst be careful painting [...]

It’s good to slowly increase nutrition if you are worried, a sign of over ntrogen is curling of leaves and rapid funky light green growth. You want a nice medium pace of rich green growth. Some plants can be ”burned” by excess nutrition….
what are the symptoms? can you share a image in your OP?

Epsom salts are fine, I use them, just don’t go too overboard. Make sure you balance the pH to around 5.8 – 6.4, this range is safe for all plants and is good for optimum nutrient uptake.
is it an EC tester? EC tends to be twice as high as a PPM test.

What I have been doing to great sucess:

Botanicare, it’s cheap and works better than any other brand I have used.
    –10 – 15ml/gal Pro Growth formula
–10ml/gal Liquid Karma (kelp extracts help the plant utilize nutrition more effectively)
–5ml/gal Cal-Mag, contains Calcium, Magnesium(no need for epsoms if you use this), Iron, and other micro-nutrients. I don’t know if it contains sulfur, like epsoms, but it has loads of Magnesium and sulfur deficiency is not very common.
–5 – 10ml/gal Sweet. used on flowering plants during flower/fruiting
–2.5 – 5ml/gal Hydroplex (this is a Phosphorous and Potassium complex along with amino acids) this is good for flowering/fruiting

–5ml/gal (GH)General Organics brand BioRoot, great stuff for the root zone, makes your roots fluffy and hairy, just like they should be
–drops of Thrive Alive Organic, this contains lots of Vitamins essential for healthy plants and helps plants recover from stresses like transplanting.
–Occasionally I’ll add a boost of Myco fungus to boost root health.
–Worm Juice from my worm composter, I add a bit when available, but it’s hot so don’t use too much. Worm juice helps with micro organisms and water soluble nutrition as well as a bonus of Chitin for spicy peppers which stimulates the pepper defense response, ie, spicy oils

Just make sure you are not doubling up on nutritional elements and you balance that pH, when in doubt, know whats in your products.
What all are you mixing, at what ratios?

There are also bins designed specifically for composting with red wrigglers, they are easy to manage and harvest water and castings from.
    I got one of these:

Iron deficiency is common in aquaponics. Some solutions are available, if you add a Calcium/Magnesium supplement, they generally have a small amount of iron, adequate for most plants. Botanicare’s Cal-Mag, for example. If you just wanna hit them with iron, chelated iron is safe for fish in small amounts. Also, plants absorb less iron progressively [...]
