    ThumbnailI was inspired to start a window farm after the success of my Father’s automated airlift system.  It is a large 8 foot tall system with an upper-reservoir and is set to only run for a certain period of time every 3o minutes conserving water and energy.  Of course this required some more advanced electronics, but [...]

    Unfortunately due to financial restraints, my project has been put on hold. Though I found many stores online that have all the supplies for reasonable price. That is an option for us small town people :)

    He gave me permission to post pictures and is even going to take some new ones of the entire system. He’s also working on getting a video up on youtube. I will post a link when he is done. Look for the photos in my blog :)

    Thanks for the great advice :) I have pictures of my father’s system and even a video. I will ask him if he minds me sharing them with the community. Also he is on here, search members under William Belcher, his account is just kind of bare. You can always send him a message requesting he post some stuff. I think his system has been a real success and what inspired me to try one of my own.

    I live in a small apartment in Vermont. You would think living in Vermont I’d be able to do an outdoor garden, but our property is shared by 4 other apartments, with disrespectful neighbors and some VERY rowdy children. My upstairs neighbor attempted plant some border plants around his front walkway and they were soon trampled. I have three large SW facing windows and recently my father built a large air-lift hydroponics system and his plants are doing wonderfully. I think I will start with the 3-plant airlift system to test how green my thumb is before moving on to larger projects. Though I am somewhat worried about my drafty windows and freezing winters here. Though I imagine moving the system away from the window and using grow-lights in the colder months may overcome this. I think tomatoes, cucumbers and green peas will be a good start, as they appear to be easy to grow and are some of my favorite veggies. Wish me luck on my window farming endeavors and I will keep everyone updated on the progress.

      Good luck indeed !

      If the windows are letting the cold air through, you might want to switch to lettuce and herbs in the winter;
      they don’t mind shorter days and will probably grow nicely, if it’s not freezing cold inside.

      Any chance of us getting to see some photos of your father’s system ?

          The more photos of different air-lift systems we get, the better – I’m too shy to ask him; maybe you could :)

      Wanted to connect with someone else trying this in NE. I am waiting on a kit to be available before I get into it.

      Re: tomatoes: I’m trying Red Pear on my balcony this summer -/ it was recommended as a good container type, so I hold out hope it will stay smaller than the Super Bush type I also have growing.
