Ginger, These are plastic buckets that I picked up in the equivalent of a dollar store here in Japan. They seem to be designed to hang on a hook on a wall. Thanks Cassie, I have since moved to a new house and am not maintaining this setup anymore, but considering starting it up again, [...]

Hi Ziska,
To answer your questions:
The green things sticking out of the bottoms of the buckets are actually devices designed to screw on to bottles and stick into the ground to drip feed/nourish plants growing in soil. Worked out for this project.
I placed cups in the top buckets and waited for about 5 minutes, then checked the levels with each configuration.
About it being easier to clean, first of all there is only half as much tubing to clean, and second the acrylic pipe is very hard and smooth like glass, as opposed to the flexible tubing, which is more like rubber. The cost is slightly more here in Japan. Flexible tubing = ¥400, acrylic pipe = ¥550
The buckets did not have holes, I just cut them myself large enough to put the neck of the bottles through.
The buckets are hung on little screws with large heads, and I can move them around very easily. The top buckets are about 1.8m off the ground, so easy to reach for most people.
In reply to - Ziska Burg commented on the blog post Double column hanging windowfarm v.2 Hi! Yes the reservoir bottle ‘disguised’ aswell looks much better! But i liked the green things sticking out of the botom of the buckets ! What are they? And the principle of the T is really interesting too! “Turns out that the distribution of left [...] · View -

About the water flow, I used brand new tubing and pipes, and the results were pretty consistent. I can see though, that this may not be the case in all situations, and maybe mine was just a fluke. I tested the volume of water coming down on each side again this morning and two cups [...]

For the water distribution, I did a simple test where I used a long one and short one, and then switched them after some time, then tried even lengths.
Not completely exhaustive testing, but consistent results so far. -

Hello from cccoollld Tokyo! It’s been a couple of weeks since I built my first double-column hanging windowfarm design, and so far it’s been very solid. Good water flow and stable system. My plants are doing great! (except for my strawberry plant. Any advice on that?) I wanted to improve on my original design, as having [...] -
Hi Ellie,
Ask where the nearest ”Home Center,” or ホームセンター is. They usually have the basic hardware items, plus household appliances.
Good luck.In reply to - Ellie started the forum topic Sourcing Stuff in the group Japan: I don’t really speak Japanese so, though I think I can figure out where to buy most of the hardware, I have no idea where to begin to look for the more specialist things like clay pellets and nutrient mixes. Any one got any [...] · View -
The most difficult part for me was cutting the holes at the bottom of the bottles, since I didn’t have my drill with me I used an Xacto. If you have a drill it shouldn’t be a problem though. If you’ve assembled IKEA furniture before, you should be able to manage this project. Start with the easier v.2 if you’re still not sure.
In reply to - Kat posted an update in the group Japan: Hello everyone!! Clay pellets can be found at most major home centers. I got mine at Viva home center. What city do you live in, BTW?

I got a Gex pump at the local pet store. Look for a pet store with fish, as a regular fish tank pump can power your airlift very well.

I built my airlift system using transparent tubing (no rigid tubing, too expensive) found at Viva home center. It’s 9mm diameter on the outside. Works like a charm.
In reply to - Jong posted an update in the group Japan: yehey. i am new in this thing and wanted to build my own kit starting with the air lift system. at the moment, i am searching for existing discussions here on how to build your own air lift system made out of materials available in Tokyo. · View -
I’ve found clay pellets at almost all major home centers, such as D2, Viva, etc.
Try ホームセンター。 -
Hi, I live near Tokyo. I put my windowfarm facing South, and have good results so far. Just see which window gets more light each day.
