Brian, I will look into trying both things you’ve suggested. I will report back! Thank you!

Okay, but are you saying that it’s just one long tube that goes through the peat in each container and it’s just slitted near the top so the water can leak out into them? I’m a little confused, sorry.

On your very first video, how do you have the water tubes feeding the peat? Are they stuck into them with a hole cut to let the water come out? I use the old drip system, but I’d like to upgrade my set-up for more production/starters.

ThumbnailHey fellow window farmers! I switched out my old gallon green tea jug with this…a football fish tank I’ve had since I was a little kid. There’s a built in filter system too, so hopefully that will help reduce the algae build up. Let me know what you all think!

  • Jeremy commented on the blog post Air Lift vs. Water pump – the rationale?   3 months ago · View

Do you have any pictures of your system online? I have an airlift with simple recirculation back into a gallon reservoir….the first version D-I-Y one. Just upgraded to a four outlet pump so I can add another system on the other side of my sill. Trying to go glass instead of plastic. But my opinion [...]

Thumbnail Here’s a pic of week 5. I use my phone’s camera so I couldn’t capture everything. I bought a new air pump with four outlets because I plan to build another grow container and put it on the other side of my windowsill. Making sure to have it elevated higher than the reservoir this time [...]

How did you half those wine bottles? Glass is the way to go. Not very fond of using plastic.

Yep it’s enough. I just can’t leave the battery on constantly because it will drain out faster than it takes in depending on the suns efficiency. I do contract work for this company and I got the gear as a bonus.
Ultimately, I’m not connected to the grid.

Okay, so how to I go about adding a couple of fish to my gallon reservoir? How will added nutrients affect them? I’m using solar to power my pump and timer. Will I need to have a pump constant for the fish? What about changing the water?

      Jeremy,

Fish do not deal well with changes in water chemistry, especially when it involved heavy metals. If you are going to grow plants attached to a fish tank, the best thing to do is to stick to leafy plants.

That looks awesome! Is this a kit?

  • It’s been almost a year since I lasted posted on here. Now I’m back with a little video update below. I bought a new air pump because my last one back siphoned due to the fact I didn’t have it elevated higher than my reservoir…oops! The new one has four air outlets, so I’m thinking [...]

Is anyone still active with a window farm in the NC group?

Thumbnail So this is my second season of window farming. I usually start a month before last frost so I can transplant to my outside garden and get a nice yield by summer. I may just keep the organic cherry tomatoes inside and see how they do. Anyone have specific upkeep tips on these? PH balance, [...]
