The paint is to make it dark for the roots because they won’t function very well in the light (they “think” they are out of the ground).

The steady drip is achieved by not letting the air escape from the tube into the bottle, I did not use any pressure in the bottle but I have noticed that the drip becomes way too slow to be of any use and even stops when the bottle is less than half full, it got [...]

Thank you, I’m glad it helped you out and that you now have a windowfarm of your own!

In reply to - Ofer posted an update in the group Israel Window Farmers : I built my Windowfarm 2 weeks ago, I started from seeds and the plants have grown very well! Thank you very much!! I am glad you enjoyed it!! As for the coco coir, it is staying put none of it fell through. i did have to expand the holes in the bottles to be able to remove the pots in order to trim the roots since they were coming through all the bottle [...]

for the first week I watered them once for 15 minutes every hour and for the second week I did the same thing during the day and 15 min. once every 2 hours at between 20:00 and 6:00 during the night and I am still using this timing, just a few days after making that [...]

    Thanks!!

I just made an order online for a 1 part nutrient that should have all the plants need, I wanted to avoid that since I already have the fertilizer and the nutrients where much more expensive and I couldn’t find any locally.

This is the windowfarm I built around 2 weeks ago: http://youtu.be/kOQVhn4Rzew I have 3 seedlings in the top bottle and 4 in the other 2 bottles Should I remove them and leave just one in each bottle? Can they grow together or would they smother each other? The ‘improvements’ I made: What I added to [...]

The window is not ideal, its blurry and you can’t see outside without opening it. It does filter a lot of the potential light I could be getting but most days the sun shine very brightly even in the winter and my room gets very bright during the day with all the windows closed, The [...]

Hello Everyone, I am new to this site and have built my window farm from the 3.0 instructions with some alterations due to some materials being very hard to find here in Israel and also some improvements. I made a video:
    http://youtu.be/kOQVhn4Rzew

I started with pea seeds in 3, 1.5 liter bottles and one reservoir bottle with 4 seeds in each bottle and they all grew quite fast on only water and are now around 8 cm in height (except one seed which I removed from the top bottle and the other two in the same bottle are about half the size as the forth one, but in the other bottles all four are uniform in size). It looks a bit crowded in there though and I was wondering wether or not to remove some from each bottle?

Also I had trouble finding any place with hydroponics equipment and nutrients so I got a liquid fertilizer for herbs and vegetables instead with instructions on applying to plants in soil.

It says on the bottle that it contains:

    N – General Nitrogen – 3.5%

    P – P2O5 – 1.5%

    K- K2O – 3%

    Iron – Fe – 2%

    contains microelements (whatever that means)

Is this usable? how much of this should I add?

    Thanks

      Hi,
Microelements are elements a plant needs, but in very small amounts. Some of these are: Mn, Cu, Mo, Zn, They are essential for some growing processes a plant needs to make healthy cells.

Maybe you don’t need to transplant them? I started with pea seeds directly in the window farm, I put them in bit of coco coir surrounded by the clay pellets. I did this last week, they didn’t do much for the first couple of days but now they are about 2 inches high and look [...]
