Hi. I’m looking for powered nutrients, preferably organic. I’m using Ohrstrom’s maxicrop right now which is derived from seaweed but if people have other suggestions I’m open to them.
I’m also interested in learning more bout the regulation of the organic label from the companies that produce nutrients that carry the organic label. -

Hi Janet. Thanks for the link. I’m actually not teaching in the classroom this year. I’m freelancing and writing this curriculum. So I don’t think I’m eligible.

Hi James. My colleague and I are developing a K-5 curriculum. We’re both former NYC public school teachers and have teamed up for a new adventure.
I’ll definitely keep you posted on our developments! I was one of the first people to have a window farm installed in my house. Sadly my husband and I had to take it down when we moved. I’m working on a way to rebuild it in some fashion in my new place. In reply to - joanna posted an update in the group Teaching: Hi. I just wanted to introduce myself. Welcome Joanna! That is exciting! What is the age group that you will be developing this curriculum for? Keep us updated on how the development goes, I am sure the community would love to help to get the ball rolling on practical / legitimized classroom use for WindowFarms. The more that gets put out there always serves to inspire new thoughts too!

I’m working on a way to rebuild it in some fashion in my new place. That’s great, getting them interested and thinking early is what I like to see! I am sure you will come up with some great hands-on activities for the little ones to build their knowledge base surrounding food production and responsible living. Can’t wait to see what you come up with! And don’t forget, this is a place for collaboration, so if you want any insight, just start a thread or make a post, and we will gladly help work out the kinks, or add in some flavor!
hi joanna, you should enter your science curriculum in the WF contest. You can win a WF for your classroom. I posted the link in a post above and it is on the windowfarms.org site under contest. If you can’t find the link, let me know and I will post it for for you.

I’m sorry, I over looked the former part.

That’s excellent. I work with Boswyck Farms in Brooklyn. We’re doing a similar soda bottle program. They’re awesome in the classroom (and at home and work). I’d love to talk more about what you’re doing.
Cheers! Joanna

Joanna Burgess commented on the blog post First Harvest
Hi Ted. I didn’t grow either one from seed–I got both plants from the Union Sq Farmer’s Market when they were tiny. The Sweet Basil grew like crazy–it got bigger everyday. I picked the leaves when it was about 1 ft tall and got 3 cups (packed down) which is the perfect amt for a [...]

Joanna Burgess wrote a new blog post: Window Farm Cat Defense
My cat Lizzie (not pictured) has pretty much killed one of my Amish Snap Pea plants. Here is my simple yet effective cat defense system: cover windowsill with many house plants, in this case orchids and 1 cactus.

Joanna Burgess wrote a new blog post: First Harvest
I had my first harvest last night. Friends came over for homemade pizza which I topped with pesto I made from sweet basil and silver thyme–both of which I grew in my Window Farm. The other ingredients were mostly local. I made the dough, grew some of the tomatoes we used on my fire escape; [...]

Hey Britta. I’m happy to help you out. I don’t think I can be an “official” intern but grant writing/research, plant care/experimentation I can do.

Good idea re: alligator clip. I’m trying to grow a curtain but I think it will take a it. It’ll be pretty when it fills in.

@Britta Hey! I wanted to use something sturdy and thin because I still need to open this window from time to time. I tried plastic fishing wire but found it difficult to work with–thick and unwieldy. I decided 28 gauge wire I bought for knitting a cover for my bottles (I’ll post a picture of [...]

@Calais The nasturtiums aren’t doing so hot. I think it’s because I couldn’t get them into my farm right away. I’m going to replace one tomorrow with another endive plant.
