@jamesnutter I have read the same thing about adding more humidity, but I really can’t do that with where it is at. I have mainly been rinsing the plants off under running water to knock the buggers off just trying to break the egg laying cycle. Sometimes I’ll dunk the whole plant in some soapy water. I also have a spray bottle with water, soap and neam oil. I really can’t say what works best since I haven’t been too scientific about it.
I had a big problem with them in November which I am still trying to recover. We went on vacation for a week and I was super busy at work so I completely neglected them for a while. Two of the strawwberries died including the baby one I had just got started from a runner. In reply to - James Nutter posted an update: Some updates from my winter horticultural forays: http://anuttahwindowfarm.blogspot.com/2012/01/infestation-updates-and-rudimentary.html . · View -

James, @jamesnutter. I am looking forward to your expanded list of topics on your blog. I too have been become more interested in some of these topics, and wish there was a forum similar to WF’s to share and exchange ideas and photos. I don’t want to get to far off topic here. I have had a small outdoor garden for years, but now want to use more organic techniques. I have started composting, picked up a second rainbarrel, have been experimenting with swales borrowing some permiculture techniques to name a few. I have been concentrating on the outside garden lately and all I have in the WF are my strawberries which are well over a year old now and one jalepeno plant which is doing fine. For whatever reason, I couldn’t sprout japenenos for the outside garden so my WF japepeno has to make it to when the tomatos start coming in for our salsa. Did you have any japepenos in that jungle of yours?

There has been some work into the BPA/plastic issue. http://our.windowfarms.org/2010/06/30/some-ideas-for-other-materials/ http://our.windowfarms.org/2010/05/05/plastic-free-window-farm/ http://our.windowfarms.org/tag/bpa/ James ( @jamesnutter) has gone so far as to use glass in most of his windowfarms. Not sure of his blog link at the moment. Its “anutterwindowfarm” or something. You are going to need nutrients in that farm sooner rather than later. The plants [...]

@jamesnutter. You’re absolutely right, and I doubt it would be easy to find a list of ingredients for water conditioner.
Airpump + airstone is a good way to gas out all the cholorine too.

@jamesnutter For the check valve, have you considered just making a simple ‘flap valve’? If you make the end of the pulser pump square, fold the edges in to create a lip, and place a small piece of metal on the inside, and fasten some sort of spring along one edge of it, shouldn’t that work? [...]

@ajinil Thank you so much!! I was wondering how to do this! @jamesnutter yeah right now the strawberries are under a bunch of cfls in my shower downstairs. Today is nice and sunny, I cannot wait to get home from work and check on my little stevias. When I was washing the soil out of the roots [...]

@bionicmel Just a note on using this goofy web site, everyone has a name and a unique identifier and they may or may not be the same. Use the unique identifier in the messages. So for example, James’ is really @jamesnutter. Click on people’s picture or name and you will see it.

@jamesnutter It’s hard to give any specific details on the systems besides what I have allready posted since I really havn’t been expermenting as much as you. In general I would say as far a overall productivity goes that the strawberries are not that productive. I get a few strawberries every few months so no big deal. I have higher hopes for the lettuce and peas. I pick the large lettuce leaves each week and between the two plants in the one pot that it is a small salad once a week. The peas are starting to come in now and we ate the first and right now there are another half dozen on there with more on the way.
You mentioned a recommendation of fulvic acid in your last post. That has been one of the ingredients in mine as I have been using ”David’s grow” nutrients. Here is the formula chart I have been working from. http://www.altgarden.com/store/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=671 I had bought a ”starter kit” when I started and that was in it along with a few other unique items like ”root roids” and ”silicate”.

I like the setup and that’s a very ambitious goal of growing all your own food. I ’d really like to know if it can be done. I think I read in here somewhere that with a certain amount of square feet it could be possible.
Some things I thought about when reading were.. Will the gallon resevoir be larger enough. When getting enough light during the summer, I was topping off my first WF gallon resevoir with an extra gallon a week and that was only 3 plants. The other is any thoughts to different different nutrients to different types of plants. One WF I have with more blooming nutrients and a PH of 6 and the seconds I have more of a vegatative mix and a PH of 6.5.In reply to - James Nutter posted an update: New post, kind of long, laying out some new aims, new design progress: http://anuttahwindowfarm.blogspot.com/2011/01/theres-water-in-tub.html and check back, I plan to put up some more relatively soon. @jamesnutter, So far I have no supplemental lighting. The experiment over the winter is to see how long they will continue to flower. I have been feeding them a blooming diet this whole time. I know a regular soil strawberry plant needs to go through a cold dormant period in order to flower so we shall [...]
