I am a high school teacher/librarian hoping to have multiple windowfarms in our school library next year. Anyone have a system up and running that you would be willing to let me visit/ask questions about? Thanks!

Ive been toying with the idea of starting a four column farm and I am finally taking the plunge. Going to the hardware store today to see what I can find as far as supplies. Im usually not hesitant about diving in when it comes to DIY and building anything really, but I am a bit anxious about the complexity of the plumbing system. That makes it all the more exciting though

Teaching: 1 month ago · Viewwell, they are cheap to build from mostly recycled materials and cost cents a year to operate the pumping mechanisms. 16 plants costs me about 50cents in power a year on a 3 watt pump. In a solar home, or even with a very small solar panel, the system can be run for free. That [...]

Teaching: 1 month, 1 week ago · ViewI was wondering if anyone has tried bringing window farms into literature classrooms rather than just science-oriented classrooms. I think there could be a great tie-in because so much poetry relies on pastoral/botanical imagery and there are a great many students who have never had a chance to really observe plant development up close to [...]

Teaching: 1 month, 1 week ago · ViewHello. I have not yet started building, but have applied for funding at my London American school (The American School in London). My intention is to try to do it myself first, and then attempt to initiate a middle school elective to teach basic gardening, botany, and sustainability concepts. The course would probably begin in January, and run until June. After making the columns, student would carry out maintenance, document inputs and yields, and participate in the research undertaken in this community. I am very excited, and hope my dabbling is successful.
One issue I am concerned with is the light available to my partially-shaded SE-facing windows. I am also curious to discover whether or not young teens will be able to sustain interest in a project with little immediate gratification.

Sensors and Controllers: 2 months, 1 week ago · ViewAutomation of hydroponics is my particular interest. I have been building a system for some years now. I use an array of sensors and have associated software for moitoring and adjusting various environmental and nutrient parameters. My software is freely available and supports the popular Phidget and Arduino hardware platforms. I hope it will be of some use for Windowfarmers. I am always looking for input, ideas and constructive ways to support the hydroponic community at large. My site is at http://www.peterphrastus.com.
