I suggest you test the pump first before exchanging for a larger one. It seems that too powerful a pump will also not work. Again it depends on the height you’re trying to achieve and other factors. No harm testing if it works first.

It looks like a nice idea, but how practical it is, I have my doubt about. Why not start with a simple form to define a WF, with fields for type(Hydroponic, Aquaphonic, custom), technology(V1, V2, V2mod, V3 and so on), placement(south/east/west/north) and a few other fields, with a larger description field and possibility of either [...]

If you have a pmp with 2 outlets, and are only using one, you may improve the efficiency of the pump by closing the other outlet. Just put a piece of tube on it and cclamp it shut. A lot of these pumps have two outlets for each ‘motor’ and if they run ‘unbalanced’ regarding [...]

It’s probably best for the plants to have the opening facing towards the window, but having them facing the other way makes it easier to insert and remoe plants in the WF.

Place your pump higher than the reservoir and there’s no need for a one-way valve. You should never place an air-pump below the water line. Like Janet said, the water pressure might be too great for an air-check valve to handle, giving you a false sense of security. Actually, most cheap aquarium pumps have a [...]

You can use any size you want. The net cups are there mostly to make it easier to swap out plants. If you find smaller net cups that fits a smaller bottle, that’s good. If not, maybe some sort of yoghurt cup or other plastic cup can be holed to make a replacement net cup. [...]

I think the posts with the latest activity should float to the top of the news page, kinda like in a forum. Currently the comments I posted on the posts gets lost and nobody notices the update. )=

What I’m thinking of doing is using Starbucks tall-sized plastic cups and drilling holes in them to use as net cups. What do you guys think?

I like all these innovative ways of mounting! I got a question though. Since we are using a tube to guide the water down into the next pot, why don’t we just completely cut off the top half of the bottle and use the bottom as a container funnel? Won’t that allow more air for [...]

@Tim, btw did you use net pots? I’m contemplating not to but experience of some others said the roots ended up clogging the bottle cap.

Or rather, what the t-joint is is an aerator that mixes air with water. Air comes in from one inlet and water in the other. So even if the air is continuous, like from a gas canister, if the pressure of the water inlet is comparable to the air, I’m sure they will mix up [...]

I think air-lift works due to the cohesive nature of water and other factors. Aquarium air-pumps actually works with a physical bellows puffing away, thus it is not a continuous supply of air. Some water will be trapped between each puff and if the tube is narrow enough, water cohesion will not allow the air [...]

Yup I read through in the beginning. It’s just takes some time to get used to, and I found the main difference between this and forums is that in a forum view, the posts floats to the top based on the latest activity. I’ve since learnt to use the “Latest activity” but it’s cluttered with [...]

Actually I’m experimenting with using the solar panel to charge the batteries in the pump cos most panels don’t output enough current to directly drive the pump motor. What’s the specs of that solar panel anyway?
