Hardware Junkie commented on the blog post Problem with planting radishes 1 month, 1 week ago · View
Most of the people I see doing root veggies are using a soiless soil medium. and they use an Ebb and Flow type system. Keeps the soil moist without them floating in water.

Hardware Junkie commented on the blog post Amount of water in my windowfarm 1 month, 1 week ago · View
The frequency sounds fine. The only thing I might recommend is that you try and direct the water away from the plant. The water needs to get to the root, it doesn’t need to hit the top of the plant.

Radishes grow best at 85F.
I’ve grown basil just fine around 70F. Normal room temperature should be fine. This chart should work for hydroponics as well. Stuff tends to grow faster, but still germinates at the same temp.

I am not really sure radishes will work in a window farm. Root veggies need soil (or something similar) to grow properly.
Are you using the clay pellets? -
Hardware Junkie commented on the blog post Issue watering the plants 1 month, 2 weeks ago · View
You want to move more water hungry plants to the top. And if you can, increase the flow of nutrient fluid. You may have to double up on the pump.

They are spider mites. I’ve had them before. The biggest problem is they spread pretty fast.
You can try to eradicate them with various solutions online, but I found the best option is to start over. They spread too quickly and recover too easily if even one is left alive. -

Tomatoes pollinate through vibration. Typically I use an old vibrating toothbrush and gently touch near the flower to release the pollen. Yours may have happened by wind or gentle brushing of the plant.

Its probably just shock. Make sure they are water and get sunlight. If you don’t have any, you are going to need supplemental lighting.

Extract nutrients from dirt is more difficult then direct access from liquid, so they should grow faster in the Windowfarm.

Few things: -Your using a jiffy puck. That might be a bad idea. Those are intended to be buried in soil. You might be getting mold build up. And eventually it might turn green from Algae. Use rockwool, or some other grow sponge. -Brown leave tips are usually a sign of nutrient burn. Try a [...]

Hardware Junkie commented on the blog post Root trimming 2 months, 2 weeks ago · View
This happens a lot because they will naturally follow the flow of nutrient fluid. You can trim them back a bit and it shouldn’t hurt the plants too much. They will grow new ones soon enough. Just use scissors.

Root veggies are difficult to grow in a window farm. You basically need a growing medium like soil, but not like soil so you get the nutrient fluid to flow through it. Perilite would probably work.
Root veggies also take awhile to grow. So they need a lot of time. -
Hardware Junkie commented on the blog post Coconut shells as plant containers. Could it work? 2 months, 3 weeks ago · View
I would probably think the coconut shells dried out without the coconut center part. You could try coating the outside in glue and see if that works. Maybe glue cracks as they form. Big ones you really can’t do much with though.

Seedlings don’t need nutrients to grow. They will grow to their first set of leaves with just water.
I am glad to see that this method worked for you, but usually it doesn’t. Basil and chives are good to grow a lot in a small space though.

Actually the main reason was because they killed so many water pumps in the V1 design. The design is still online at the bottom of the site:

Hardware Junkie commented on the blog post Lighting 3 months ago · View
I didn’t use supplemental lighting in my first windowfarm and I had lettuce and tomato plants grow fine. It was March and the temps outside were just above freezing. I noticed that without additional lighting, the grew towards the window and stretched fairly far trying to get to light. Some plants will just stop growing [...]

Hardware Junkie commented on the blog post Mediums to grow… Foam, Sponge, Water beads? 3 months ago · View
With regards to the various other options, RootIt, Suretogrow, etc. As long as the growing medium doesn’t break down, it should be fine. You key items to look when choosing a growing medium is that it holds water and blocks light from the roots.
