"Spotted a cheap TDS meter on a website. http://www.dealextreme.com/p/0-7-lcd-tds-water-tester-2-x-lr44-80940 $11.50 including shipping worldwide. I wouldn’t expect much in accuracy of it, but at that price… Yes, the site is ‘legit’. I’ve shopped there at least a dozen times myself. They [...]" · View

Hi Tyson, yes we are still working on this, though its been slow. There are a few different groups very interested in having something like this. I can post some of the basic requirements we came up with for the system soon and you can see what aspect you might like to take on!

I’m so glad to find and get involved into this wonderful community!
    So let’s get started
For about one year I’m interested in theme of city farming, vertical greening and home gardening. I and my friends go to this activity and have some experience. I have to say that here in Russia we are now on the initial stage of the hightened interest of society to the coming back to Mother Nature without leaving the city. So we look for the appropriate way!
We’re beginning to develope the window farming. I’m graceful to you, because here I find such a huge support.
Certanly I will share my experience!
For a start I suggest to translate the instructions into russian language!
Also I want to make friends with you? dear window farmers;)

  • samenrahmen commented on the blog post Help my plants are dying   1 year, 2 months ago · View

Roots (=plants) need a beneficial bacterial/fungal environment for healthy growth – using this charred earth tactic will kill off said environment time and again. And then, just as in conventional agriculture, all sorts of unwanted thing will get to your weakened plants. Remember, you aren’t working in some sterile Space Shuttle environment; you have to [...]

If that’s any help to you: I couldn’t get these two species to grow, either. Why don’t you try the following: Stop using the peroxide, reduce the humic acid to the absolute minimum, and put in salads, (or peppers/tomatoes/nasturtiums) – if normal salads don’t grow, you can still change things in your system; I think [...]

Growing two in one pot is actually not such a good idea, unless it’s peas or beans.
The plant nearer to the window doesn’t have to bolt because it’s getting the lion’s share of the available light -
in March, that is, which is why there aren’t any flowers developing very quickly.

I’ve posted about my Arduino sensor project here:
    http://our.windowfarms.org/2011/02/11/arduino-sensor-controller-box/

I’d love to have collaborators! I’m looking to start a meetup for working on these projects at the Windowfarms HQ in Brooklyn on Thursday evenings. When I get the schedule figured out I will let everyone know!

If you have any good links to ideas or projects you’ve found, please post them up!

Hey great! I’m going to post some photos of what I’ve been working on. I think for the interface, it would be nice to make something multiplatform (I use an Apple myself). I started to build an interface using Processing (http://processing.org) which I can post up sometime soon. Definitely HTML/JS would be great for the [...]

You can read more about the system here: Hydroponic Sensor Box Right now, I have some parts of the system working: Timer/controller for turning on/off pump or lighting system that is programable to very small intervals Brightness sensor Humidity/temp sensor Whats left [...]

Hi Michael, how far have you gotten with your sensor? Would be awesome to hook it all up to the wifi and the this thing would be able to tweet.
