Does anyone have to supplement their window farm with extra lights? I have just started mine and I’m hoping there will be enough light, at least in the summer months, to grow regional vegetables.

I bought a Petco 9902 pump, and I suspect it is too weak. I think this because water isn’t circulating to the top. The recommended Petco 9903 has been discontinued. Does anyone know of a store in Seattle to purchase an alternative pump that will be sufficiently strong?
Hello Marcus, I’m new (since December) but my experience has been — when the water did not work properly there was an air leak somewhere. I experimented with sealing all leaks and putting my air intake deeper or more shallow. Also when the pipe had too many curves it did not work as good. There is a possibility of a bad pump though. Bummer!!! I hope you can figure out what is wrong. MY WINDOWFARM HAS BEEN A JOY FOR ME and I would have been greatly discouraged if my first system had not worked. Sylvia – Manchester IN USA
SODO Hydro has a small selection of air pumps that’s worth looking into. I’m not to that stage yet, but I will be heading there for to check out their pumps again when I’m ready.

My partner found the recommended Petco 9903 pump today up in Shoreline near Seattle. We tried our system with that and it worked a little better, but it did not make a significant difference. Then we bought a 2.5 gallon container of water at Safeway and used it for our base water. We stood it upright measuring 11.5”, compared to 7.5” for the previous bottle. This made all the difference. Water is now pumped through the system at a steady pace. With that bottle in place, we re-hooked up our Petco 9902 pump and it worked as well. However, we prefer the 9903 because of the dial which allows us to run the system at the lowest setting, making it much quieter than the 9902.

Hey I was in New York in March interviewing Britta Riley herself for my documentary about urban farming. Now I’m in back home in Portland and I’d love to meet a few windowfarmers from the Northwest. My brother and a bunch of cousins live up in Seattle so I come there pretty often.

I’m interested in getting some tilapia fish to run my aquarium based windowfarm. But the source I found requires you to buy 25 at a time. Is anyone interested in going in on a group buy?

I put together a 6 unit column this weekend. It hangs above my rubbermaid fish tank. I’m trying beans first then I’ll move on to other plants. I tried to make it an 8 unit column but the water didn’t want to travel up the sixth. I picked up the 1.5 liter electrolyte water bottles from Trader Joes. Because I prefer a straight sided container but I had to hot glue in a little half inch lip inside the water bottle to get the net pot to stay in place at the opening and not fall to the bottom of the bottle. I used the two bicycle pump needles in drilled holes a few inches up the tube and added a sponge filter over the bottom of the tube to keep the snails and small fish out of it. The tanks is actually my cat’s ”fish TV set”. So it’s not much to look at but fully cycled and already on the floor. Ph 7, Nitrates 5.
Sorry the video is sideways Ha! I come from a photoshop world where images are rotated. Not an option with video. I’ll reshoot tomorrow.

howdy,
where did people get their bottles? I don’t buy bottled water so… I don’t have a source at the moment.
you go to basically any store, then buy something that’s in a plastic bottle.

just saw the TEDtalk and I am totaly excited about this idea! I live in a townhouse Issaquah and have great big windows, but no yard/garden, so window farming seems like a great solution.

Hi Matt There is a great post by Brian Marshal here just near this post, that has some great lighting suggestions. My experience has been that my plants were much happier when I added two lights. They turn their leaves toward those lights. Later on I plan to add more lighting, but I did not have supplemental lighting for a while. When I go to the south room (big big window) the sun will be better. I hope you enjoy your windowfarm as much as I enjoy mine. Sylvia from Manchester Indiana.
