Hi Britta,
That’s great information, thanks! I’ll do my research and see if I can find the place. A weed shop in Tokyo?! Who knew?!
Did you do anything special with your windowfarm for design week, or just the usual? I ask because I’m trying to make the career move from scientist to designer and one of the ideas I had for my course application portfolio was combining a windowfarm with sculpture to make something beautiful (which isn’t to say I don’t think the rough and ready DIY appearance doesn’t have a charm of it’s own). I’m curious to hear of anyone else who has modified their farm purely for aesthetics.

How about an attractive clay pot filled with stones rather than concrete? I’m assuming your wife vetoed the concrete bucket because it would be ugly, if so, and if all you want is a heavy base, it shouldn’t be too hard to make that out of something more attractive. The starter $30, three bottle version [...]

In reply to - C. Nearing posted an update in the group Japan: Ellie, you can find clay pellets at you nearest plant nursery. Ask for nendokyukei ねんどきゅうけい「粘土球形」or just katakana-ize clay pellet クレーペルット. Happy searching. · View

Hi Yamada-san,
I want to build my own system in my apartment in Shinjuku, but I don’t speak Japanese and I don’t know where to source things like the clay pellets and nutrients (I think I’m ok for all the hardware). Could you let me know where you bought yours?
Ellie
In reply to - Taro Yamada posted an update in the group Japan: Hello folks! I just set up my system, here in a window in down town Tokyo. Hopefully if this goes well I will be able to cover every window in the house and be able to start eating lots fresh veggies! (^^) · View -

Japan: 5 months, 3 weeks ago · ViewI don’t really speak Japanese so, though I think I can figure out where to buy most of the hardware, I have no idea where to begin to look for the more specialist things like clay pellets and nutrient mixes. Any one got any suggestions?

Hi ellie-
Its britta. I built a windowfarm in japan for tokyo design week last year. I found a hydroponics store. It was all about growing marijuana, but they had everything I needed. It was not far from tokyo midtown. we took about a 20 minute walk there. i wish i could tell you the name but we had a translator. All I can say is see if you can google marijuana and tokyo??? the storefront next door was a ”head shop.” They sold glass pipes for smoking marijuana.Hi Britta,

hello there. do you know where i could get Hydrotons or clay pellets in Tokyo. i’ve been searching throughout garden supplies in Sangenjaya but found nothing. i tried limestones to replace hydrotons but unfortunately the seedlings died after a week. it seems like the limestones are absorbing the nutrients that left no more food for the plants.
is the hydroponic store in tokyo midtown sells hydrotons? where is the place exactly located?
I’ve found clay pellets at almost all major home centers, such as D2, Viva, etc.
Try ホームセンター。
