Sorry to read this post so far behind everyone else. Really it is a frustrating issue. Food and/or organic waste is a MASSIVE waste of resourcess for everyone. The preparation of fruit and veg at home, restaurants, cafes, etc, and the pedantic judgement that retailers put on the appearance of thier products results in MEGATONNES [...]

Hi Danny. Great idea. And would love to see your progress. Using your fish tank to fertilise your plants and clean the tank water is, the principle behind “aquaponics”. I have had a few headaches with this method for feeding plants and keeping fish happy in a vertical hydroponic situation (as opposed to flood and [...]

    Hi Ed.
Thanks for the reply. And sorry it took so long for a response.
I took your advice and was more careful with washing the hydroton, soaking, etc, etc.
    However!
It turns out that in Sydney tap water has gone from P.H 7 to P.H 8 because the water supply that once flowed from dams
now comes from our de-salination plant.
Hydroponic enthusiasts all over Sydney are apparently experiencing the same problem.
    Thanks again.

In reply to - Ed commented on the blog post What does algea look like, and the dreaded P.H ?? Bare in mind that pH 7.0 is neutral, yes it’s high for plants but it is the point that chemical reactions are balanced so if you keep your water acidic which is obviously what you need to do and have unstable [...] · View

Hi Peter. Wicked looking set up and growth results there. One thing. My ears pricked up when you said youre pump shut off from lack of water. I checked the link to where you bought the pump, looks very similar to mine. But mine has no low water shut off. How did you do that [...]

Hello all. I have got my bottle columns up and running now. And am doing some tests for waterproofing, timing and P.H readings. I have added my nutrients, clay balls, the whole shooting match is ready for the plants now. HOWEVER. The P.H seems to keep rising into the 7′s. Not ideal. I was wondering [...]

A quick question with, I am sure, no quick answer. I am building a top reservior system. A 23 watt water pump, on a timer, gets the water to the top of the resevoir, and gravity feeds it down. Simple! But what if a pipe were to disconnect, leak, or water to leave the system [...]

Please excuse me if I missed it. But when you say “worm compost tea” do you mean the run off from the bottom of your worm farm or, tea brewed from vermicast? I ask only because I took to pouring the run off from my worm farm onto my plants. And it had a devastating [...]

Thank you Hardware Junkie for getting back to me. Looks like I will have to not be so lazy and just paint them. Megan, yep i had the same problem with the paint just flaking off grrrrr! I really wanted to avoid the gaffer tape, I’m not to keen on the aesthetics of that one. [...]

This site may help if you have a worm farm. http://www.wormfarmingrevealed.com/makingwormtea.html I have a worm farm and i’m running out of garden to put the cast into. So I thought I would give this mix a go in the W.F The brew seems to have a lot of plant beneficial bacteria and nutrients and is [...]

Hi everyone from down under. Here in Oz we we have square-ish hdpe bottles for our milk. I have been looking at the product specks for this material and it has “hazing”  properties. I asume this is stop the milk oxidising from sunlight. So does anyone think that sunlight will be “hazed” enough to negate the need [...]

@Bram Thanyou. Some tighter tubing and better conections got the pump belting out air at far better depths. And the experiment sent water flying all over the garden, great for the kids when its 30DegC here at the moment. Cheers.

I like the look of this idea. Drawn by curiosity, the simplicity, and I love aquaponics!, have tried a couple of experiments myself. Question? A. The size of the tubing leading up from the bottom percolator bottle must be of a maximum width? as I have found that the surface tension breaks and the water [...]
