I’ve now modified the design to use the bottom containers as reservoirs (11L each, exchanged with tinted plastic ones). Finally found watertight tube fittings which I could screw into those containers. Works well for nearly two weeks now, apart from a little organic buildup. Now off to the store to [...] -

As you said, I found that tweaking the length of the water tube (with red arrows in your illustration) was crucial to getting the right balance between air and water in the water tube going up to the plants.
