They look pretty much dead. I’m still not sure what they are. I threw out the plants that had most of them, rinsed off the rest as good as i could. Cleaned the rest of the wf and now i cycle it with clean water all the time. So far i haven’t seen them back. [...]

Dear Windowfarmers, I’ve been away for a couple of days and the windowfarm held perfectly, altough i was grossly amazed at the amount of different types of disgusting stuff going on in some of the plants!! (-: Algea, chalk (and other stuff that was dissolved in the water and then the water evaporates), random gunk, but [...] -
burt commented on the blog post Seeding directly into the window farm 1 month, 4 weeks ago · View
Do you think whether or not this is going to work is plant-dependent? If not, what do you think it depends on? In other words: what would be the reasons for this to work or not to work? If it would be plant-dependent, we could keep a list of plants that don’t mind growing directly [...]

I had lots of trouble with seedlings, and especially the part where you don’t kill them. I tried some (not all) of the rituals involving paper towels, rock wool, sand, coconut hair, etc. The seedlings need attention about twice every day, just to check the humidity. If the soil/medium dries out for a couple of hours, [...] -
burt commented on the blog post Coconut shells as plant containers. Could it work? 2 months ago · View
I’d be inclined to think that the roots might try to “eat” into the coconut shell, because it is not hard or water resistant enough… And i doubt the shells would stay in shape long enough for it to be worthwile. Even if they last a year, i’d go for something that would last longer… [...]

burt commented on the blog post Some parts and a question about cats, nutrients and drips 2 months ago · View
Yeah, one of our cats sometimes tries to eat from one of the plants, but swapping the plant with another one (higher up), solved that. The biggest damage i could imagine is if they damage one of the tubes, and the whole farm spills on the floor. I did that without the help of my [...]

Yeah, me. I only have windows on the north and one to the east, where the south-east corner is blocked by a higher building. My basil plants died off in winter, one by one, exactly in the order in which the amount of sunlight would decline: the plant in the darkest corner of the farm [...]

burt commented on the blog post Buy this lamp? 3 months, 1 week ago · View
I ended up buying that lamp, using ot for a while and then i put them away again, because i didn’t feel it added much. Then winter came and days became shorter (i don’t have windows to the south, all the plants get is a varying amount of morning sun), the plants started to die [...]

It’s beautiful! A friend of mine wanted to adopt one single (‘specific’ ;-> ) plant of mine. This would be a perfect gift for him!!

burt commented on the blog post Some issues with plants-solutions? 6 months, 3 weeks ago · View
I hope some people can be more specific than me, but for what it’s worth: I have unhappy chives too. They kinda look like yours. I’ve tried both more and less water, but that doesn’t seem to be the issue. Our tap water has pH 8, so i tried to bring that down to 6 [...]

For what it’s worth: Don’t confuse the airpump method with a water pump. It’s as quiet as an aquarium. In my living room/kitchen, the whole thing is quieter than my fridge.
In reply to - burt posted an update: I’ve bought some materials, but i haven’t really started yet. There’s soo much i still have to read up on, especially nutrients. Does anybody have a link to some basic tutorial about nutrients? Also, i’m thinking about a few mods, so i’ll just share some of it: Put the airlift tube in [...] · View -

Hi everyone,
Which plant is your biggest success, food-wise?
Thanks!

I think it wouldn’t be quite the same. The amount of water that goes through my WF is MUCH bigger than 1.5 L (it’s at least about .5 L per half our, so that would be 12 L per day). The thing i’m more worried about is the interval between watering. When my plants miss only a couple of water cycles, they turn pale. Especially young plants that just came from seedling school die off when they’re dry for a couple of hours.
I too looked into a solution without a pump, because i thought it would be a hassle. Couldn’t think of something that wasn’t more hassle, and then i was surprised at how cheap and easy the pump system is. As an added flexibility, turned out that the reservoir, the pump and the windowfarm don’t have to be at the same place. In my setup, they’re about 2m apart…! And now it needs so little attention, i wouldn’t want to imagine having to water the WF every day…! It’s a non-anser to your question, but advice nonetheless: reconcider the pump! (-:
That’s not to say that it isn’t possible. Perhaps you could resort to another grow medium that holds water longer…?
BTW, this post is pretty old, you can look for my more recent posts or my gallery here:http://our.windowfarms.org/members/burt/

Time for another update. The first few weeks haven’t been very promising, but things are changing for the better. Some parsley roots i transplanted from soil are doing quite well. The first three or four leaves it grew died off, making me feel very bad about myself, but now look at them! Even the little [...] -
burt commented on the blog post Open-source science: What’s the pH of your tap-water? 1 year, 2 months ago · View
I live in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. On the website, it reads the pH should be between 7,46 and 8,17. When i started, i bought a cheap pH meter (the yellow one, i think everybody’s got ;-> ), and it measured 8.1. I just took another measurement and it was 8.3, which might be the pH [...]

Totally agree with Brian. I like how the reservoir itself has a spot for a big plant. Do you have problems with a bit of water remaining in the bottom of the containers? Also, did you obtain the plants we see in the pictures as plants? Or did you “window farm them all the way”? [...]

Ignore this one. I intended to post it in the forum post, not under this specific picture.

Yeah, so “good” soil contains nutrients. They will dissappear (be eaten) over time, but if you have “good” soil (that contains nutrients), you could use that, and have the pump just keep it moist with plain water (you would need MUCH less pump-time to keep soil wet!!) Hydroponics plants grow faster than soil plants, dirt [...]
