Florida: 3 months ago · ViewWell have moved into my new home, still unpacking though. Currently trying to decide how I want to do my hrdroponic system. Since the room I originally planned to use (the northwest dinning room) gets very little to mostly low lighting due to direction facing and large oaks blocking light, I am thinking of doing something small in there first with shade loving plants like peas, beans, spinach, and lettuce. I am also thinking of a shade loving herb garden of mints, sage, lemon balm, and some others herbs for tea/cooking. I will save the sun loving plants for when I finish organizing the craft room which gets a lot of southern eastern/western light. I am impatient to start and have been slowly gathering recycled supplies. My latest recycled find was a 3 gallon water bottle from someone throwing away their filtered water device. My only current problem is I cannot make up my mind if I want to use it as a water resevoir or try and find a cap/top for it to use in soda making or homebrew as it is the perfect size to fit in my fridge. It’s a case of when hobbies collide. ^_^*

For Beginners: 8 months, 2 weeks ago · ViewHello all! I am new to hydroponics and plan to do my first hydroponics garden soon. I want to try my hand on one of the hanging windowfarms with recycled 1 liter bottles. I have been saving up the bottles and even some net baskets that I have left over from an aquatic plant purchase that I made for my fish tank. I am pretty sure I know where to get my hands on some clay pellets locally but I am unsure about the compost sponge part of the project. Would those seed starter sponges work? I know I can get those at Wal-mart and I also plan to start with some heirloom seeds that I have.
Also I noticed that some people have used cherry tomatoes in the 1 liter hanging gardens, do they actually work well in those or is it a case of starting them in a 1 liter then transplanting them into something larger later situation? I have some cherry tomatoe seeds and if they do grow well in the 1 liter bottle gardens then I would like to try that but if they will need transplanting to a larger container later I would rather wait and do it with a larger hydroponic container later.
Thank you for your assistance in this.

Florida: 10 months, 4 weeks ago · ViewHello Florida Windowfarmers! I will be moving into my first home soon and look forward to trying my hand at a windowfarming. I was wondering how to make use of a southeast facing kitchen window for gardening and have been curious to try my hand at hydroponics for a while. After reading ”Your Farm in the City” by Lisa Taylor and learning about this website I look forward to doing my first hydroponic garden. I can make use of my waterbottles (other than as seed starting containers) and now have plans for what to do with a window that I wanted to do a garden in anyhow. I look forward to learning from this website and the members insight.
