I have a three bottle system up and running!!! I was going to start out with the original blueprint for the 12 plant and double reservoir, but it was too costly and needed more hardware installation than I was prepared for.
This seems to be running well, Im just concerned about the drip rate. I have a steady stream going but feel like it will be too much. How long should I leave it running?

The knots are adjustable so I can change the height of the plants pretty easily if needed. It was all super simple. (in [...] · View

great, i didnt see that link before, thanks!

The plans from windowfarms.org says both are needed, but i see what you mean for the different systems. I wish they gave plans for different versions. I am going to make a simpler version, i did see some others on youtube, so that was helpful.

In what way? I think you should either need one or the other. An air pump for the simple version, or a water pump (which could be submersible, but doesn’t need to be) for the reservoir version.

Okay, I figured it out. The air pump uses an air stone in the bottom reservoir to keep the water aerated. The water pump is used to actually move the water to the upper reservoir. So in the larger plan, it would be necessary to have both. They do have plans for a simple 3 plant system just after the link to the larger one.

Thanks Travis, that looks cool, easy and much cheaper, Ive already spent over $100 for mine. But I will modify and return most of the stuff. Thanks again!

I’m building my first window farm right now, it’s a 3-4 plant system and I posted a few videos on youtube of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlW4wCOebTE and even though it’s not finished, I have a few modifications in mind that I’ll work on in the next few weeks.

Kimberly and everyone- We are so sorry. There were links to both on the homepage, but we realized a couple days after the NPR story that the link on the homepage that was supposed to take you to both instructions was only showing the more complex reservoir how-to. Our bad! So sorry. Hope you guys found your way eventually to the easier airlift system and if you didn’t it’s here: http://our.windowfarms.org/2009/07/29/3-plant-air-lift-window-farm/.

Hi, Yes I would like if there were pictures of other systems. I’m just starting mine. I’m a little freaked out at the cost of it all, I didn’t expect to spend so much on this project. But I’ll do it for Science!

I have gotten the materials I need to make the 3 plant setup to see how I like doing this. Now the directions on how to make it is easy and great. [...] · View -

The nice thing about these farms is that they’re pretty modular.
So if your airpump has a spare outlet it’s easy to add another column later, even on the same reservoir, if the columns are close enough together.
It’s only when you run out of outlets on your air-pump that the cost increases much.
My farm ran with 15minutes/Hour during the day and half as often during the night this summer.
(Unfortunately, it seems the PH ’bombed’ and that killed off my plants when I was away… )
Remember that the clay pellets will contain a lot of moisture, releasing it slowly back to the plants.
How much water does it pump?
(Do a 5minute catch if possible. )
