Thanks everyone for all the comments! @Guillame: Yeah with lots of trial and error in the beginning, it’s amazing how fast everything has grown. Good luck with your farm! @Louis Dalpe Lavertu: I’m not sure when or if the peas will stop flowering. It seems that their vertical growth has halted somewhat with all of the [...]

Just thought I’d share some pictures of my farm’s progress. You can see in the last picture that the snap peas and lettuce didn’t appreciate the pure fish tank water after having the nutrient solution. I switched back to nutrient solution and everything is fine now. Made two large salads last week after harvesting some lettuce [...] -

I did! I’ve adjusted my drip settings to match the output of the airlift, so I run the pump 24/7. After bleeding the lines of all the air, there was no more potential for an air lock. There also seems to be a balance that helps stabilize the level of the elevated reservoir. For example, [...]

I planned on having net pots in each clay pot for root stability, however, the 3″ net pots I had were too large to fit any good amount of hydroton into the clay pots with them. So I did just go with hydroton inside the clay pots. If the clay pots were bigger I would [...]

I just saw an ad in one of the magazines the local hydroponics store gave me for those Sunblaster T5 lights with the reflector. They look like they would work really well for my garden. I’m gonna go by the hydroponics store later to see when they can get those in stock if they haven’t [...]

Thanks for the comments guys. I don’t know why I hadn’t thought to remove the cover from my light. It’s a cheap $10 “portable grow light” from walmart. I thought I’d give it a shot for 10 bucks. I haven’t had much of anything in the way of sunlight for the past week and the [...]

I’ve been having a lot of fun modifying and tweaking my windowfarm setup, however, I haven’t got it just the way I want it yet. Below I have a bunch of pictures showing my current situation. I have a reservoir on the ground which feeds an elevated reservoir above the plants. The elevated reservoir is fed [...] -

For my setup I just have a cheap Brinks mechanical timer from Wal-Mart. It cost around $7 I think. It has a grounded outlet you can plug your air pump into, and is accurate to 15 min. intervals. I bought another one for my small fluorescent light as well. I found the light in Wal-Mart’s [...]

Thanks for the comments, I like the idea of an elevated reservoir and a drip ring…I’m already thinking of ways to improve the design. On a separate note, how often do you guys water your plants? I had a consistent drip going when I had the plants in bottles, but one of the plants drowned [...]

What kind of a reservoir are you using? The deeper the better, so that you get more submergence of your lift tube. When I built mine I had a similar issue, but changing my reservoir to a deeper 1-Gal Mott’s apple juice bottle solved my problem. I also used 1/8″ polyethylene tubing instead of 1/4″. [...]

Oh, and I’ll definitely be looking into Fox Farm. They have it listed on my local hydroponics store’s website, I just think they were out when I was there.

Thanks for all the comments guys. For now I think I will grow three lettuce plants, and “flush” with clean water for the last 7 days before harvesting. Can’t hurt.

This is an awesome picture with the snow and the strawberries. They seem so out of place… I think the smaller diameter hose inside of the bigger hose is a really neat concept and a good idea. It must work like a venturi tube. Since you decreased the area for fluid to flow, and the [...]

Well the local shop where I live is pretty expensive, the Envy I bought was $15 per bottle and I got the part A and part B so it was $30. However, the organic solution they had was $35 a bottle and I needed two bottles of that as well. I started off looking online [...]
