Tad- You are awesome! I love the DIY spirit here. Hack that Windowfarm! Yeah, the sites are not quite integrated yet. We are working on it as fast as we can, startup style! The my.windowfarms.com site is intended to be the upgrade to this site, but we are still building one last major feature that [...]

Do you love windowfarms? The windowfarms core team, headed up by founder, Britta Riley, does too. We have managed to influence 42,000 lives and we’re growing like crazy to reach new populations beyond our DIY core. Where else would we go to recruit our new operations leadership than our very own community?   WINDOWFARMS RECRUITS [...]

Fantastic! I think we will revise the images to show regular pliers. I’ve also found that moving the airflow back to low helps. Great job!

Most seedlings do not need food for the first few weeks as they are still feeding off of the seed.

  • Windowfarms commented on the blog post Help! New windowfarmer starting from seeds   2 years, 2 months ago · View

Hi @Ale. Sorry to hear about your casualty! The grow plugs look pretty dry in your second picture. It’s important to keep them moist throughout the germination process. I think that’s the culprit. You can reuse the growplugs for a second batch but first you need to sterilize them. Boil a pot of water. Use [...]

What kind of nutrients were you using?

  • Windowfarms commented on the blog post Photovoltaic panel to run the air pump?   2 years, 3 months ago · View

Oops. So most important is to figure out the battery for your wind powered system. If you can get your wind turbine to power a 12 volt battery, you can store that power via an emergency car battery charger kit. There are air pumps available that run on DC energy. I ran into someone a [...]

  • Windowfarms commented on the blog post Photovoltaic panel to run the air pump?   2 years, 3 months ago · View

In order for a pump to work with any kind of incoming power, it will need to be able to save that power when the power is not being generated. So, in this case, when the wind is not blowing.

  • Windowfarms commented on the blog post The dreaded algae   2 years, 3 months ago · View

If I may play the devil’s advocate here, algae is not such a bad thing. Sure, it eats up a tiny amount of your nutrient solution, but there is no harm whatsoever in a little algae. It’s not beautiful, but its natural and some discoloration over time is a small price to pay for being [...]

Sylvia- So sorry to hear about your recent troubles. Having an aquaponic system is definitely a commitment. If one thing goes wrong you have more to worry about — animal + plant pets!! I have a salt water aquarium and a bunch of windowfarms and they are not even connected. Still, I can totally relate [...]

@Juan David Garavito – What makes you think that growth is bacterial and not just algae? Since you are a microbiologist, can you take it to the lab and test it? EXCELLENT REMINDER TO EVERYONE TO USE FOOD SAFE MATERIALS IF YOU ARE GOING TO DIVERGE FROM THE INSTRUCTIONS!! LET’S ALSO DO A BIOLOGY REFRESHER [...]

  • Windowfarms commented on the blog post Nutrient Question   2 years, 5 months ago · View

@Laura- Georg is correct. Those nutrients are for the early stages of plant life and for plants that you don’t want to fruit, like lettuce. These are called “vegetative” stage plants. If you are wanting to grow fruiting and flowering plants, we consider that “Level 2.” Congrats! You’ve graduated! You will need to get the [...]

Hi Sylvia. Wow. Sounds like an adventure over there! So with the tomato flowers- what exactly is the problem. Are you getting flowers but they are not opening? Does that mean they are not growing beyond buds? Or are you saying that you are not getting flowers at all? Or are you saying that the [...]
