  • Windowfarms commented on the blog post Sudden raise in temperature killed my plants (or coincidence?)   1 day, 12 hours ago · View

Hi Jason, Sorry to hear about your casualty. Yes. One of the hazards of indoor gardening is the few days of drastic temp change as we turn off and on the heat. At least we aren’t completely at the whim of mother nature; just “human nature,” haha. Anyway, I was going to throw my two [...]

@ciaran First of all, I would advise making a full post about this. Go to the gray dropdown bar at the top of the page My Posts > New Post. Putting it on the comments here will not get you as much traffic and input as the front page will. I would also use the tags [...]

Guys- I’m really sorry about the spam. We are using an opensource platform and it is a little buggy. We have had to strike a tradeoff between problems with new users registering and keeping out spam, especially in the smaller group forums. It takes a lot of work to patrol. If any of you are [...]

Wow. This is such an awesome system. What did you use for that rigid tube? What industry is that pipe used in? I also love your fill level indicator. Your fellow Germans and other Europeans I’m sure will be very excited to learn about some of the equipment you used. Will you please consider contributing your sourcing information to the german translation of the windowfarms instructions? If so, please write to translate[at]windowfarms.org and we will then give you a couple of very easy instructions and links for contributing to the international instructions.

Thank you again. I can’t wait to see a picture of your farm with plants.

Great job on the documentation!! I think this video deserves an award of some kind. Super high five!! You also get a bunch of bonus points for how many things you did so creatively with little things around the house. My favorite is the CD-as-a-spacer. I am also really excited to have seen your coco [...]

  • Windowfarms commented on the blog post How to: cleaning tubes?   2 weeks, 2 days ago · View

Yep. I just got some bead chain (heavy, so if falls through the tube) and one of the end couplers with the hole in it. I tied some cotton twine or a mop thread into a little loop at the end. It works best when the twine is dry and the gunk inside the tube [...]

  • Windowfarms commented on the blog post Indoor Humidity   2 weeks, 5 days ago · View

There are few universals when it comes to a window’s indoor microclimate. If this is a concern for you, you could just undertake to monitor it and adjust accordingly. You could get an air humidity sensor and adjust airflow to the area by adding a fan or directing whatever kind of HVAC system you have [...]

Hassan- The pump may be the problem, but several other things may be the problem instead. Please use the troubleshooting guide at http://our.windowfarms.org/2010/03/05/airlift-troubleshooting/. Scott- This is Britta. I’m glad that you are anxious and I can’t wait for you to get growing too. We sent out the survey through Kickstarter that asks you for your shipping information a few days after the project closed. You should have received it both through your Kickstarter account’s messaging and through your [...]

  • Windowfarms commented on the blog post Petco Pumps Discontinued?   3 weeks ago · View

Yeah. We may actually be responsible for it. The local Petco here in New York literally hates me because we basically revealed how bad their quality assurance was. I think I returned at least 10 pumps to them for various reasons. Their checkvalve failures were really high and it seems that a lot of the [...]

  • Windowfarms commented on the blog post Petco Pumps Discontinued?   3 weeks ago · View

Look for a brand called Active Air. I think they are universal. You can basically use any aquarium air pump, but just watch out for quality issues. Also, we prefer kinds that have the dial so that you have an additional level of control over the flow. The physics of the V2 generally cease to [...]

  • Windowfarms commented on the blog post Petco Pumps Discontinued?   3 weeks ago · View

Sure. Get the four outlet kind. Don’t block the other two, use them. You can use what is called a manifold or a t-connector or y-connector (ask for them at the store) to unite two air outlets into one. Or, you can get two airstones and direct them into your reservoir so that your nutrient [...]

  • Windowfarms commented on the blog post Silencer?!?   3 weeks ago · View

Matthias- Ian Hays , an architecture student who was my intern early on in the project, came up with the silencer when I complained that my v2 system sounded like Darth Vader was camped out rasping/burping in my windowsill once an hour. Most of the problem, we determined, was actually caused by the moment at which the [...]

Thanks for the encouragement and sorry that I was frustrated when I wrote that. This issue is very important to me and I’m so anxious to get to a good solution, but it is complicated and it is just taking time to work out the legal part. I just want to reiterate my commitment to [...]

  • Windowfarms commented on the blog post Silencer?!?   3 weeks, 3 days ago · View

Silencer instructions are in the v2 airlift instructions. Find links to all instructions post on the homepage left. However, if you use the rigid tube from the v3 instructions, the system is quiet and you use the gurgling sound caused by the larger diameter tube.

Nice, Ken! I love it! I was in Tokyo in 2010 building a windowfarm for Tokyo design week and I went to Tokyu Hands to find many materials. I could hardly resist the urge to buy some of the super cute stuff they had there that would make good containers, but I had a limited [...]

Yes, They work for strawberries, depending on your light and the particular variety of strarwberry seeds. I would consider strawberries a little more advanced, not a starter plant unless you are already a gardener. You might want to start with greens until you get the hang of it and then progress to strawberries. You may [...]

yes. That would be awesome. We had to disable some of the spam filtration plugins because they were causing registration issues. The bug remains elusive. Please send an email to info windowfarms org and ask pirapha for credentials to get in to the site and for an intro to amit, who can maybe hand off [...]
