If you want plants and fish that will be happy together, definitely get some aquatic plants to oxygenate as well as the veggies on top. My fiance and I are trying to set up a 50 gal with Discus and a few cories. I have some ideas for growing lettuce in pvc pillars as bases, but unless you have a refugium it will be difficult to grow many edible plants because of the hoods needed for lighting.

In reply to - Jason posted an update in the group Aquaponic Window Farms : question for you guys, any advice for fish types that work best. I have a running tank (27 gallons) with a few african cichlids. The tank tends to sit around d a ph of 8 I also have a 50 gallon sitting in the garage i could [...] · View

Well, bad news. I had everything going great, then a couple of fronts and a week of below freezing temps did a number on several plants. All of my squash, one pepper, and nearly my rosemary all died at once. One pepper is still (barely) alive, and my greens had to be removed because they obscured my vision. I still want to research a few different plants while it is fairly cool, but I may have to wait until after february is over before I put any new plants out. If anyone has some ideas, I am more than willing to hear them.

Just had a near freeze last night, and the peppers did just fine!. The cold was kept out for the most part by the car’s insulation. I looked out this morning and saw the leaves were green, the stalks tall, and the flowers full. The second I get another pepper to grow I will post some picks. Stay tuned!

Well, it has been a couple of weeks, and the peppers are doing great! I have two self-watering pots in my cup holders, and have been keeping the car in the bright sun as much as I can. The moisture and temperature are tricky to control, but my peppers are VERY happy. These were both stunted, sickly looking peppers I started in february. Now they actually have fruit forming! Look forward to some pics later on this week. Happy thanksgiving guys!

That is pretty much the idea I have. If you never hit highway speed, you can definitely grow plants in a truck bed. Once you come up to about 50mph, though, the plants are going to start suffering. Plus, not everyone has a truck. The bed makes it easy to plant, but what about the interior of a car? The exterior? I figure most people in an urban environment have cars. Can we actually use the empty space in a car to grow veggies and other plants, and still seat people, groceries, and who knows what else! Definitely good to see someone succeeding with some method. Thanks for the post!

Looks like the cooler weather was the trick! I put out a sickly pepper last week in a cupholder. After only a few days, it actually perked up more than it had outside! This is a good sign. I will post pics soon.

I have a pretty good assortment of plants growing now (even though it is winter), and I have just had some breakthroughs! Spider plants and philodendrons are both supposed to start out as hydroponics, but with certain criteria being met can continue on as such. i work in an office building with plenty of fluorescent lighting even down on the desks. This coupled with the regulated temperature makes for awesome year round growing!

It may not be a vegetable crop of any sort, but I am going to try growing a spider plant aquaponically. The idea is to set up a vase with the plant growing hydroponically. Once it it stable and happy, I will add a fish for entertainment and nutrients. This is a large vase, but it will still only be able to house one betta/gourami. I will post as this develops.

The weather is cooling off again, so I will once again attempt the bizarre. I generally have enough sunlight to grow things, and the inside of my car is always warmer than outside. I will try again to rig something up to allow me to fool plants into growing in my car. For those who are new, I drive a PT cruiser and live in texas. I had great success over the summer with a number of container plants. Hopefully I can continue through the winter with my means of conveyance. Stay tuned!

Doesn’t it seem like an IV-style system could accomplish this goal as easily as the rope setup? Set the flow at the start and it should be able to do everything just as well (if not better for things like fertilizer). Have a reservoir on top and bottom to distribute and collect the water, with the same tubing that the regular electric system uses to carry the water between the two. if you got creative with it, the top and bottom could be interchangeable. You would just have to switch the bottles once or twice a day to keep the flow going. Has anyone tried this before?

In reply to - Will posted an update in the group For Beginners : A friend of mine showed me a ”window farm” of hers using no hydroponic equipment at all. It used just a simple wicking system with a porous rope that ran through the center of each cell with a reservoir hanging at the bottom. It was entirely self contained. [...] · View

Well, it may be the store-bought set, it may be that i am in texas; whatever the reason, my rig only sprouted one plant. At least I can say this system is possible, but needs certain conditions to work. The temperature and sunlight are the main issues that i saw. with a greenhouse rig, you don’t have to water as much, but the plants overheat and lose the light they need to thrive. Has anyone else tried and gotten different results?
