Just wanted to say hey to everyone here…
and share a quick and dirty timelaps of us building out first windowfarm.
not everything we did got captured, but most of it:just general information i thought you would find interesting:
- the total cost of the parts was around $100. the most expensive part was the air-pump $24 and I went with an iv pole $40 to hung the system on… i thought it would be a better choice instead of drilling the wall and it’s movable. but I guess having a coat hunger is cheaper solution
- most parts are from local hardware shops ( tubes, plastic color spray )
- seeds are from west coast seeds, very good seeds, every single one of them sprouted… much better then we expected.
very fun project. see you around

Vancouver, BC: 1 year, 4 months ago · ViewIf anyone is interested in being part of a co-learning workshop to build a window farm this spring (March), please get in touch with me. If you are experienced and would like to help us newbies, please get in touch as well.
I would like to join from english bay.
That’s great, Typhoon. Will this be your first Window Farm?
I’m organizing with the Vancouver Tool Library. Have you heard of them before? They’re an amazing tool lending co-op. They’re the best. Seriously. We’ll be buying all of the stuff we need for the participants since that’ll keep thing cheaper and more efficient (instead of everyone running around trying to get smaller quantities of the same stuff).
I’ll make sure to keep you in the loop. Help spread the word too, and let me know if anyone you know might be interested in joining.
Hi Typhoon.
I told you I’d keep you in the loop, so here’s the update.
I tried building the window farm as described on this site, and I absolutely couldn’t stand the noise of the air pump! So, I decided to postpone doing the workshop until I had a product I could stand behind.
I’ve been thinking about how to build one without the pump. I’m now thinking about a column of these: http://www.envirogadget.com/recycling/organic-herb-growing-bottles-made-from-recycled-wine-glasses/I haven’t tried yet though. I’m hoping to get to that this week.
Cheers
Jodi
sounds like fun, I would like to help out a little. i finished my own custom made windowfarm ( no leaks! ) and today/tmrw going to start seeding.
it’s fun building it, if you want a hand…That’s awesome. Thanks for the offer.
Great to hear that yours is doing well. I tried building the window farm as described on this site, and I absolutely couldn’t stand the noise of the air pump! What kind are you using? Do you find it to be quiet enough?

Keep in touch, and I’ll do the same. It would be great to pool resources.Jodi
Has the workshop / build already happened? I checked the Vancouver Tool Library calendar of events and didn’t see it, maybe I’ll get lucky and it’s starting soon?
I tried building a window farm and I couldn’t stand the noise of the pump. Also, it seems to be more expensive than I had anticipated.
So, I put off the workshop with the VTL for now. I’m going to experiment with a pumpless system. I’m going to try building a column with the bottles this way:http://www.envirogadget.com/recycling/organic-herb-growing-bottles-made-from-recycled-wine-glasses
I’ll for sure keep you in the loop about if a workshop happens. If not, I’ll let you now if the progress anyway.
Jodi
Whenever you start organizing a workshop, I’d like to be a part of it. I am working now to collect materials, if you have any advice on where to get supplies, please share!
Hey Katie. I have extra on the flexible tubing so don’t bother getting that. Any luck finding Presta tubes?
