Philadelphia: 2 months, 1 week ago · ViewHi, are there any members that live in Philly-Center City or close by? I am a newbie and would like to look at a set up before starting my own.

Philadelphia: 5 months, 3 weeks ago · ViewI am part of a group at Haverford College working to start a food cooperative and hopefully I’ll be able to get a little bit of local greens into my life throughout the winter. I’m going to be missing my CSA share big time!

Philadelphia: 1 year, 3 months ago · ViewI’m in Doylestown and I’ve got the perfect window. It’s little, just 3×4’, but I think it can make a good salad someday. I am just starting with hydroponics and want to learn what I need.
Lettuce grows to harvest in as little as 8 weeks depending on the variety. I am sure you could do something with that window.
Thanks. Where are seeds available?
If there’s no gardening centres nearby(I epect them to be setting up for selling seeds now since it’s almost season now) you can always try online.
Maybe this one?
http://heirloomseeds.com/Personally, I use a Swedish shop
http://www.impecta.se but I’d expect shipping across the pond to take a while.
(Also, there may be import restrictions.)Try googling for a nearby seedstore.
Yumm! I’m getting excited at the thought of plucking and cooking my own chard.
Ok, so what’s easy to grow? I like Heirloom Seeds, but I want really easy for my first try. I will have 8-10 pots.
To my disappointment, Heirloom website says: ”Due to the unusually high volume of seed orders received,
we have temporarily suspended taking any additional orders at this time. We will re-open in late March. ”
I’ll second the motion on the lettuce. It seems pretty easy to grow. I was just going to be posting this up today anyway when I saw the lettuce comment.
http://our.windowfarms.org/2011/02/13/lettuce-for-lunch-15-weeks/You’ll probably be going to a hardware store (Here in Chicago — Home depot, Menards, Ace, etc) to get parts. They all have their seed displays up now getting ready for spring so take a look. Online is also an option for seeds if you are looking for something different. In the past I have used ParkSeed.com.
