    I don’t really speak Japanese so, though I think I can figure out where to buy most of the hardware, I have no idea where to begin to look for the more specialist things like clay pellets and nutrient mixes. Any one got any suggestions?

    Get to a home center. I found everything I need at the local home center, and I’ve been to a few others in the area, and they all have the basics that you need … save for the net pots. I had to order online to get mine.
