Japan: 3 weeks, 5 days ago · ViewGet to a home center. I found everything I need at the local home center, and I’ve been to a few others in the area, and they all have the basics that you need … save for the net pots. I had to order online to get mine. Hit me up if you need help [...]

Hello everyone!!
I’m really happy that theres a group in Japan for Window Farms (^^)I read up about WIndow farming and wanted to try to make my own, but was worried that I’d be on my own and wouldn’t know how to put it together or where to find any of the materials…
I’m gonna start on making a window farm after the New Year =)
One small question…
I have two big windows and wondering which one to set-up my yummy veggies.
A South-East facing window, and a South-west window…which one is better?よろしくお願いします~(^^)
hello kat. have you ever found a shop in Tokyo that sells hardware for windowfarming? i am in desperate need of Hydrotons.
Hi, I live near Tokyo. I put my windowfarm facing South, and have good results so far. Just see which window gets more light each day.
Thanks Ken, I think I decided that the South East Window would be the best. =) I haven’t gotten all the equipment to build my windowfarm yet…but working on it =)
Silly questions…for someone who has never really built anything big before, is this a difficult project?? o.O
Thank U for your help!!
KatThe most difficult part for me was cutting the holes at the bottom of the bottles, since I didn’t have my drill with me I used an Xacto. If you have a drill it shouldn’t be a problem though. If you’ve assembled IKEA furniture before, you should be able to manage this project. Start with the easier v.2 if you’re still not sure.

Japan: 2 months, 1 week ago · ViewEllie, you can find clay pellets at you nearest plant nursery. Ask for nendokyukei ねんどきゅうけい「粘土球形」or just katakana-ize clay pellet クレーペルット. Happy searching.

Japan: 2 months, 1 week ago · ViewI don’t really speak Japanese so, though I think I can figure out where to buy most of the hardware, I have no idea where to begin to look for the more specialist things like clay pellets and nutrient mixes. Any one got any suggestions?

Hi ellie-
Its britta. I built a windowfarm in japan for tokyo design week last year. I found a hydroponics store. It was all about growing marijuana, but they had everything I needed. It was not far from tokyo midtown. we took about a 20 minute walk there. i wish i could tell you the name but we had a translator. All I can say is see if you can google marijuana and tokyo??? the storefront next door was a ”head shop.” They sold glass pipes for smoking marijuana.Hi Britta,
That’s great information, thanks! I’ll do my research and see if I can find the place. A weed shop in Tokyo?! Who knew?!
Did you do anything special with your windowfarm for design week, or just the usual? I ask because I’m trying to make the career move from scientist to designer and one of the ideas I had for my course application portfolio was combining a windowfarm with sculpture to make something beautiful (which isn’t to say I don’t think the rough and ready DIY appearance doesn’t have a charm of it’s own). I’m curious to hear of anyone else who has modified their farm purely for aesthetics.
hello there. do you know where i could get Hydrotons or clay pellets in Tokyo. i’ve been searching throughout garden supplies in Sangenjaya but found nothing. i tried limestones to replace hydrotons but unfortunately the seedlings died after a week. it seems like the limestones are absorbing the nutrients that left no more food for the plants.
is the hydroponic store in tokyo midtown sells hydrotons? where is the place exactly located?
I’ve found clay pellets at almost all major home centers, such as D2, Viva, etc.
Try ホームセンター。
