Florida: 3 months ago · ViewWell have moved into my new home, still unpacking though. Currently trying to decide how I want to do my hrdroponic system. Since the room I originally planned to use (the northwest dinning room) gets very little to mostly low lighting due to direction facing and large oaks blocking light, I am thinking of doing something small in there first with shade loving plants like peas, beans, spinach, and lettuce. I am also thinking of a shade loving herb garden of mints, sage, lemon balm, and some others herbs for tea/cooking. I will save the sun loving plants for when I finish organizing the craft room which gets a lot of southern eastern/western light. I am impatient to start and have been slowly gathering recycled supplies. My latest recycled find was a 3 gallon water bottle from someone throwing away their filtered water device. My only current problem is I cannot make up my mind if I want to use it as a water resevoir or try and find a cap/top for it to use in soda making or homebrew as it is the perfect size to fit in my fridge. It’s a case of when hobbies collide. ^_^*

I have downloaded the plans for a basic three container window garden. I’ve had success with ornimental plants in my east-facing office. One of the things about growing indoors in Florida that I’ve noticed is that airconditioning makes things dry out faster. I’m eager to build my first unit and test it out in one of my south-east exposure windows. I’ve heard about urban farming in our SE Florida communities and I’m hoping to be able to offer some of the things I learn from them. I think collaboration is the key so, all of you please post your grand and partial successes.
I’m only just getting my first system together. but I’ve been researching for about a month on hydroponics. I’ve talked with a few people and read 5 books(and about half a dozen thesis papers) on the subject of hydroponics.
I’ll have my first system up and running in time for Christmas, so I’ll definitely let you know how it goes. Just remember to subscribe to the Florida Group.

I’ve never managed to successfully grow anything other than a bit of lucky bamboo and pothos. Looking forward to trying my hand at my own little garden where I don’t have to spend hours digging in the dirt in the sun. I’m a pale skinned Florida girl, I don’t tan, I burn!

Hey FL window farmers, I am also moving into condo/house soon.. and will be trying my hand with this window farming.
I am not 100% sure though since I feel that deriving the plant from soil is wrong and all the Microorganisms that are abundant in the soil too! Also why the hell is the lady using Plastic bottles lol doesn’t she know that those are TOXIC? The plant absorbs it and then you eat it.. yum!!
There are ways around these issues and I hope to it that this group will do something about it..
Hi Carlos,
The nature of open source techniques, I hope you’ll agree, is that participants build on the trial and error of the rest of the group. It’s up to all the individuals to carry the project forward by identifying the pit falls of their pre-runners and then, most importantly, experimenting and suggesting more developed ideas. The more participant, the more suggestions, the more developed the project becomes.
To that end, perhaps you could suggest an alternative the recycled plastic bottle technique currently in use?
Clay pots, possibly or other alternative items like ancient people used to use..
I have seen others try clay pots.

As well as wine bottles.

Florida: 10 months, 1 week ago · ViewHey, guys, I’m just an old Hippie from St. Pete trying to get some feed-back from other Florida window farmers. Anyone care to share what they’ve learned/experienced so far?

Florida: 10 months, 3 weeks ago · ViewHello Florida Windowfarmers! I will be moving into my first home soon and look forward to trying my hand at a windowfarming. I was wondering how to make use of a southeast facing kitchen window for gardening and have been curious to try my hand at hydroponics for a while. After reading ”Your Farm in the City” by Lisa Taylor and learning about this website I look forward to doing my first hydroponic garden. I can make use of my waterbottles (other than as seed starting containers) and now have plans for what to do with a window that I wanted to do a garden in anyhow. I look forward to learning from this website and the members insight.

Florida: 11 months, 3 weeks ago · ViewHi Florida windowfarmers. I am new to this, and not really good at blogging and such…I have a tendency to lose replies and such, but I am really excited about starting a window farm, am NOT much of an engineer or builder and REALLY need pretty specific plans on how to build something. (AM pretty good about following directions), but I cannot find specific plans, or I am not looking in the right spots or cant figure out how to get to where I need to go. Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions? I would LOVE to get started on this project as florida is such a difficult place to grow vegetables, with the heat, fungus’s,bugs and other hungry critters, I see very little of my crop. I have started SIPS but they are still exposed to the vagarities of central florida weather weirdities. Thanks
