Starting my first indoor aquaponics system. I am excited to see what this site has to offer.

Recently installed kitchen hydroponic windowfarm. Uses water pump to circulate the water from a 2 gallon reservoir through 10 hanging pots. Climbing rope is used to hang the pots. The system is hooked up to a timer that turns it on once for ten minutes every 3 hours to cut down on electricity use and keep the annoying pump noise to a minimum.

Hi there – you have a pump that’s about as strong as mine, and I currently have it on for 15sec every hour.
10 minutes of a flush as strong as this will probably unsettle the plants, so you might want to keep it to a minimum, or maybe throttle the pump a bit.

Good advice. My timer has some pretty severe limitations, though. Can you recommend one that will allow this level of control that won’t break the bank?

Well, as this one – http://our.windowfarms.org/2010/04/10/lucky-reptile-easy-timer/ – will probably be hard to come by, I’d suggest purchasing a digital timer.
Which will probably have a minimum of 60sec.
Which leads to the good old system featuring an air pump that’ll certainly be cheaper than a new timer :)

Tried several air pumps. Sadly, the lift requirement is over 5 feet. Like you, I couldn’t find any entry level products; the cheapest interval recycling timer I found available in the US was $70 or so. That’s more than the rest of the system combined. I’ll stick with what I have for the time being and perhaps just shorten the ”on” time. Thanks again.
