In the research phase

12:20 pm in Getting Started, made from scratch (without a kit), Meetings, pumps, questions, Seeking Advice by Alexander Tome

Hey guys!

So I’m in research phase for building my WindowFarm after I saw Britta’s TED talk and I have to admit that I have a ridiculous amount of information swirling around in my head and it’s starting to overwhelm me. I’ve read dozens of articles on here and there are still a few things unclear to me.

Basically, I was hoping I could do a site visit to someone that has an established WF somewhere near my neighborhood (Clinton Hill, Brooklyn) so I can see it in action and get a good visual of all the working parts in person. Would anybody be willing to let me in to see theirs?

I’m thinking of doing a set up similar to Jenna Spevack’s (seen here: http://our.windowfarms.org/2010/05/05/plastic-free-window-farm/) though I may have to cut corners on the no plastic idea. I’m also trying to start off with three or four columns in my GINORMOUS 7.5′ x 8′ living room window. I know that’s pretty ambitious, since it’s my first aeroponic system, but I think the process is pretty straight forward, and I’d rather just get it all done, rather than build the first and then have to scale up later. My research seems to indicate that I should have two separate air lift pump systems so that I have enough lift. Is that correct?

Thanks in advance for all your help and I can’t wait to be eating my very own pak choy!

Window Farms and 350.org on 10/10/10

2:03 pm in Education, environmental impact, Getting Started, International, Meetings, Other Cool Urban Ag. Stuff, Uncategorized, Windowfarms Project News by Emery Premeaux

Hi all!

I would like to encourage everyone in the windowfarm community to consider hosting an action party on 10/10/2010 for 350.org!

350.org is an international community effort to encourage positive climate change initiatives in governments all around the world.

10/10 is the chosen date to celebrate success thus far, and to educate others on the importance of taking action.

10/10 is also a perfect opportunity to host a Window Farm class!!!

Share your knowledge, help others get their farm started, re-use all those PET bottles!

Workshops?

6:47 pm in Meetings, Windowfarms Project News by britta

I just got a suggestion that we hold workshops at the windowfarms headquarters for folks who want to build their own systems.

For the most part, we have been trying to keep all the know-how building online here on the website so that people based elsewhere can benefit as well (like the Finland Windowfarms team!!).

However, I am considering holding workshops occasionally again at headquarters in South Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We would ask for a $25 per person donation to the project in exchange for a “cooking show” kind of demo session and customized troubleshooting advice.

Interest? We would probably hold the first one in April 2010 sometime.

Chicago Windowfarmers?

3:58 pm in Getting Started, Meetings, Seeking Advice by lena12

Hello,

I am a student at Columbia College Chicago and I did a report asking to bring the Windowfarming system somewhere in Chicago. I have gotten a great response from this and just had a meeting with the Garfield Park Conservatory regarding getting a windowfarm installed there. They have agreed to provide space and materials. However, we need to have someone who has completed a Windowfarm in Chicago to help us with putting this plan into action. This is a VERY ecxiting opportunity to get the word out about Windowfarming!

Is there anyone here in the CHICAGO area who has completed a windowfarm?

Or, is there a way I can find members who are in Chicago, either would help.

Let me know!

Waterpod Invite- Windowfarms portion at 3 pm

Waterpod Invite- Windowfarms portion at 3 pm

This Sunday, I will be giving a workshop on the Waterpod! I will focus on whatever are the interests of folks who show up. If you bring measurements of your window, I can help make sure you walk away with a sketch of a full reservoir system designed specifically for one of your windows and all the specs for your components. I will also have a demo model of the three tier system with me.
Lots of other fantastic urban ag specialists will be around. Come hang out!
