Fishtankwater

Hi I’m trying to use the water of my tank to put it in my reservoir of windows farm. Does somebody do that? If yes, how often do you put new fishtank water? And do you put back the water of the farm in the fishtank or do you throw it away? I thought I can put it back as the plants should clean the water like in aquaponics system. But the difference is that the system is not turning all the day (i mean the water stay in the farm before going back in the tank so maybe it’s bad for the fish ) what do you think?
Sorry for my english
Thanks for all your help!
@mumubu Hi Murielle,
I used a fish tank for a while and it did very well. Go to the groups tab here in windowfarms and search for the aquaponic site. That helped me understand how to put my system up. I went to the Purdue University site on the internet also, and I was able to adapt the to a small tank for my small window. Some of my work is on the aquaponic.site. I did need to keep my fish tank cleaned of too much of the solid fish waste. When I put my aquaponic setup back up I will get the fish aquarium in operation first. Have a wonderful time learning. Thank you for your response. I can not make a real aquaponics system because my tank is big and not close to my window. That’s why I have to transfer manually the water of the tank to my window farm.
Hi Muriell,
I went and did an aquaponics windowfarm this summer. Its doing great! I think that returning the water from the plants to the fishtank is ok. But its wasteful of your time. instead contemplate moving the fishtank nearer the window for more automation. The essence of windowfarming is to have fun though so do as thou wilt.
Hi again, Like Charles above said if you are able to get the fish tank closer I would, but doing it away from that ank might work out. From all the different types of aquaponics I have looked at – the action of the water going up into and through the plants feeds the plants. When the water comes back and falls into the fish water – this action brings the proper bacteria to the fish tank. If my fish tankI was far from my window I would still try to get the water back into the fish tank as soon as I could.
Hope you have fun with growing your plants and fish together. I am looking forward to getting my aquaponics back up later on. Sylvia
