My air pump cost $30, and that wan’t the cheapest at the aquarium shop…
I also purchased a one way valve to ensure no water went back into the airpump for $3 and some tubing for a couple of $.
Spending $800…. WOW! Should be much cheaper than that…

Note: you can buy a complete windowfarm kit for $119 including the air pump required…
Definately an easier way, if you don’t have time to spend sourcing materials etc.
If you want to build your own, like i said $20+ upto $50 should definately be adequate.
You need to decide how many columns you intend to have… If you want two columns then pick a dual output pump etc, make your life easier than splitting airflow from single outlet.
The 4 x output pumps are more expensive, but then you could have three columns and an airstone in the resevoir to keep it mixing…
read the beginners forum, lots of useful tips
Cheapest one I bought was $15 bucks from an Aquarium store.
20 bucks max.
Petco 4outlet air pump #9904 $19.99, they also sell 1, 2, and 3 outlet versions.
