Windowfarmers R&D-I-Y: An Open Source Community Developing Hydroponic Edible Gardens For Urban Windows

NY Windowfarmers
Windowfarms are space-conscious vertical food-growing gardens for urbanites that use a dirt-free technique called hydroponics. You can buy a kit or build your own using low-impact or recycled local materials.
This site is the online community of windowfarmers around the world. Together, we are continually getting better at growing food in the local conditions of our own homes. We are contributing to the “green revolution” as non-experts. We call it R&D-I-Y, or research and develop it yourself. We use this site to collaborate on evolving designs for these vertical hydroponic systems– proposing experiments, testing techniques, and developing a shared knowledge base around the many variables involved in building and maintaining a farm inside a city apartment. Welcome!

Holy cow, how easy is this?! I registered with the site, did some research on “air lift pumping”, watched LOTS of YouTube videos showing exactly the same thing with different layouts for the Window Gardens and I’m going to make one tomorrow. I’ll add it to my hydroponics gardens and next week my auquaponics garden.
Thank you so much, keep up the great work and keep the ideas flowing.
Making it greener.

Hello there.
Is anyone looking into solar powered pumps? Would be wonderful if this system could be powered without mainstream (fossil fuel) energy.
Thanks

Hi. Looks like a very cool idea. I’m a land farmer/gardener (boy, do I feel ordinary here), so I like to see people growing and eating good food. You go, Window Farmers! A few thoughts. 1) Would real soil in pots work just as well? 2) Reflectors, something like shutters, which you could adjust to stick out at appropriate angles, would work to boost sunlight intake. A simple automatic (timed) adjustment mechanism would be easy to make, too. 3) If the owners of the building you live in allow it, you could perhaps extend beyond your window area, onto the adjoining outer walls, by making window boxes. That is, is you need more “land”. Maybe some of these things are already being talked about – I just got here. Excuses me if they have been covered
