Don’t see why this would not be a problem. Be carefull of leaks. Not sure why you want it below reservoir though.

because i haven’t figured out how to start a new post (embarrassing…) i’ll tack my question on to this:
can the pump sit outside and below the reservoir? for example, drill a hole not on the top, but on the bottom of the res, run tubing from there the pump (below and to the left, or in front) and run rigid tubing up regularly to the top res. is this sensible?

Here’s some of a follow-up conversation with Jay that happened offline:

J: It seems like the smaller, cheaper pump requires a smaller reservoir, which is probably what most people want.

B: The biggest factor on the pump is how high it pumps. They are only rated to pump so high and sometimes they don’t even pump as high as they say.

J: I guess the issue is that the smaller pump won’t pump as high?

B:Yes.

J: Have you guys determined what an optimal drip rate is or if it matters?

B: Depends on what you’re growing. I like to make the system drip as fast as possible because then you are less likely to get clogging. This makes growing rosemary for example pretty difficult. It doesn’t like getting soaked.
